I am honored to share a case study I co-authored with Dr. Lena Batt and Dr. Caitlin Brecklin, published in the Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership: “I Won’t Pay for Schools That Don’t Do What I Want”: Navigating Community Trust and Beliefs to Maintain District Fiscal Stability in the Midst of Political Polarization. Public education is built on relationships, trust, and a shared commitment to students. Yet, in today’s increasingly polarized environment, school leaders are facing complex challenges as they work to build community support, communicate transparently, and make difficult decisions that impact the future of their districts. This case explores the importance of understanding community values, strengthening fiscal transparency, and engaging stakeholders as true partners in the work of sustaining strong public schools. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the preparation of current and future educational leaders and to continue examining the critical issues facing public education. A special thank you to my co-authors for their collaboration and commitment to this important conversation. #EducationalLeadership #PublicEducation #SchoolLeadership #CommunityTrust #SchoolFinance #Superintendency

A new arts program connects Duke and Durham! 🎨🤝 In its inaugural year, the Mary Duke Biddle Duke Arts Fellows program brought together Duke students, Durham Public Schools arts educators, and Duke University faculty mentors to support arts education in Durham classrooms. This past March, students culminated their work with a showcase on Duke’s campus. This special celebration featured original student art and highlighted the power of mentorship, creative learning, and community partnership. Another big push over the summer at Glenn Elementary School in Durham for Durham Public Schools to get ready for school this fall! The new gym, media center and classroom spaces will be great additions for the fall semester. I'm proud of how hard this Clancy & Theys Construction Company and The Daniele Company LLC team has worked through a complicated and occupied phased renovation to deliver such a quality product for the school system.

It was such a pleasure co-presenting with Darian Harris and Mia Morris yesterday to explore a question that matters far beyond traditional tech careers: What role does computer science play in a workforce increasingly shaped by AI? We asked the room to think about a career field like healthcare, business, agriculture, manufacturing or education. Then we asked them to name one task in that field already being changed by AI. Some of the examples: A healthcare worker evaluating an AI-supported clinical recommendation. An agricultural worker interpreting data from a precision agriculture system. Questioning an automated forecast in business. Computer science is still often viewed as preparation for careers in cybersecurity, programming and IT. Yet nearly every career we discussed now requires people to understand data, systems and algorithms, question automated outputs and know when human judgment needs to take over. AI is undeniably changing the role and importance of computer science, along with who needs it. These foundations matter for students entering technology careers but increasingly so for students preparing for healthcare, business, agriculture, manufacturing, education and many other fields. Really grateful to share this session with Darian and Mia whose work in Durham Public Schools grounded the conversation in how they're rethinking the role of computer science, AI's impact on the workforce, and career readiness for their students, along with the district realities of how to practically make this work.
