With rising summer temperatures in Douglas County, Douglas County Animal Services is reminding pet owners to take extra precautions to keep animals safe and comfortable during the heat. Hot pavement, high temperatures, and limited shade can quickly become dangerous for pets. A good rule of thumb: if the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws. Please keep pets safe by following a few simple reminders: * Provide plenty of fresh, cool water at all times * Never leave pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time * Limit walks to early morning or evening when temperatures are lower * Avoid hot pavement and check surfaces before walking * Make sure pets have access to shade and cool resting areas * Watch closely for signs of heat stress such as heavy panting, drooling, weakness, or disorientation Small steps can make a big difference in protecting the animals we care about most. Yesterday , the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners presented a ceremonial proclamation commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Lake Tahoe Summit. A special thank you to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) for its leadership in protecting and restoring Lake Tahoe. As the convener of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP), TRPA works alongside more than 80 partners—collectively known as Team Tahoe—to advance projects that improve water quality, restore watersheds, enhance forest health, combat aquatic invasive species, support sustainable recreation and transportation, and strengthen the long-term health of the Lake Tahoe Basin. Since the inaugural Lake Tahoe Summit in 1997, the Summit has united federal, state, Tribal, regional, local, scientific, environmental, and private-sector partners around a shared commitment to conserving one of our nation's greatest natural treasures. Together, Team Tahoe has completed more than 900 projects that have made a lasting impact on Lake Tahoe and its surrounding communities. The 30th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit, taking place August 19, 2026, will celebrate three decades of collaboration while reaffirming a shared commitment to preserving Lake Tahoe's remarkable natural beauty, ecological significance, and cultural heritage for generations to come. Douglas County is proud to recognize TRPA, Team Tahoe, and all of the partners whose collaboration continues to protect and preserve Lake Tahoe for future generations.
