We just published research that could transform how we think about food choices. For the first time, dietary assessment and environmental impact scoring are integrated into a single platform. Here's why this matters: We've known that food production drives climate change, but consumers have had no practical way to measure the environmental footprint of their actual dietary patterns. Until now. DIEM (Dietary Impacts on Environmental Measures) quantifies the environmental cost of complete dietary patterns—greenhouse gas emissions, land use, nitrogen inputs, and water use—in a single, actionable score. Generated in real time alongside diet quality metrics. The implications are massive. Researchers can now study how environmental impact information influences behavior. Food-as-medicine programs can help patients improve health while reducing their environmental footprint. Health systems can integrate planetary health into dietary counseling. We can finally give people the power to align their food choices with both personal health goals and planetary health. What we measure, we can manage. Reinventing how we assess and improve diet
About us
Diet ID is on a mission to make Diet a Vital Sign. Founded by David L. Katz, MD, MPH, Diet ID is The Evidence-Based Nutrition Well-Being Toolkit that empowers your population to eat better, one bite at a time. Our core invention is a real-time dietary assessment, which is the fastest validated, comprehensive dietary assessment available. Our image-based approach saves 90% of the time and expense, making it possible to conduct dietary assessments at scale. We pair this module with a goal setting module and a daily actions module, helping someone turn healthy eating into an everyday habit. We partner with wellness companies, health systems, and employers to deliver comprehensive, white-labeled, scientifically valid nutrition measurement and improvement solutions. We are an all remote team of wellness, nutrition, and healthcare leaders, researchers, operators, and clinicians squarely focused on improving the dietary quality and overall quality of life for the masses.

We just published research that addresses a critical gap in nutrition science and food-as-medicine programming. Diet quality scoring systems routinely penalize cultural dietary patterns that exclude certain food groups (like dairy in East Asian diets), even when those patterns support excellent health outcomes. We introduce the FQVT (Fixed-Quality Variable-Type) approach, which standardizes diet quality across cultures while accommodating diverse diet types. Mediterranean, East Asian, and Latin American dietary patterns can all achieve the same high nutritional standards without forcing unnecessary food group inclusions. Diet ID's 1-minute assessment makes this practical at scale, transforming what was logistically impossible into something feasible for food-as-medicine programs, diabetes prevention, and cardiac rehab. The Diet ID team is so excited for the publication of our paper, "Dietary assessment at the confluence of public and planetary health: introduction of the DIEM (Dietary Impacts on Environmental Measures) scoring system," published in Frontiers in Nutrition. In this paper, we describe the development of DIEM, a new scoring system that quantifies the environmental impact of dietary patterns by combining greenhouse gas emissions, land use, nitrogen inputs, and water use with measures of diet quality. It represents an important step toward connecting personal and planetary health through real-time dietary assessment. https://lnkd.in/e88-_f88
