  • We had a great time with the DAS team (and even some of our Connecticut Technical Education and Career System colleagues) at last night's Hartford Yard Goats Baseball games! The Goats spotted their opponent a 2–0 first-inning lead, then stormed back to win Game 1 of the doubleheader, 4–3… undoubtedly the biggest comeback win of the night. No need to check what else was happening in sports. Anyway, it's always fun to spend time together outside the office, cheer on a Hartford favorite, and celebrate the teamwork that carries from the workplace to the ballpark. Thanks to everyone who joined us!

  • A new chapter is beginning for Westhill High School. DAS Deputy Commissioner Eleanor Michael joined Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Mayor Caroline Simmons, students, and local leaders in Stamford for the groundbreaking of the new Westhill High School, a transformational investment in students, educators, and the broader Stamford community. With a total project cost of approximately $446 million and an 80% state reimbursement rate, this is one of the largest school construction projects in Connecticut history. DAS is expected to support the project with an estimated $356.8 million grant. The new, approximately 450,000-square-foot high school will be built on the existing Westhill campus and is expected to include nearly 100 classrooms, career-pathway spaces, science labs, enhanced athletic facilities, and sustainable design features that meet or surpass LEED Silver goals. DAS is proud to support this important project through Connecticut’s school construction grant program, helping deliver modern, safe, and inspiring learning environments for generations of students to come. Congratulations to the City of Stamford, Stamford Public Schools, and the entire Westhill community on this exciting milestone.

As our latest Aspiring Leaders cohort wraps up, the most consistent insight wasn't about strategy, communication, or even leadership frameworks. It was internal. The leaders who grew the most weren't the ones who mastered new skills fastest. They were the ones willing to sit with discomfort — to look directly at the thing they'd been quietly avoiding. There's always a good reason not to go there. I hear them regularly. And honestly, it's work I'm continuously doing myself; it's easier said than done. But when someone gives that avoided space even a little attention, something shifts. That's when leadership development stops being an exercise and starts becoming transformation. The final projects from this cohort hinted at exactly that: personal growth, self-awareness, leading from the front. Not as buzzwords, but as genuine attempts to challenge their own agency. Leadership looked different 30 years ago. Three years from now it will look different again. And as the pace of change accelerates, so does the opportunity for growth and transformation. What remains consistent is that this internal work isn't soft. It drives productivity, performance, trust, and engagement in ways that surface-level development rarely reaches. Grateful to have been part of another strong cohort. Amy Wieliczka Margaret Hackett, PHR, SHRM-CP Camille K. Connecticut Department of Administrative Services Nicholas Hermes Michelle Gilman

  • This Military Appreciation Month, DAS proudly honors the service, sacrifice, and dedication of our nation’s past and current military service members. Yesterday, DAS’s Equal Employment Opportunity Center of Excellence, in collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs, hosted the Military Appreciation Month 2026 Ceremony to recognize and celebrate those who have served. We were honored to welcome keynote speaker Carlita R.B. Cotton, Ph.D., a U.S. Air Force veteran and member of the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs Board of Trustees, whose personal and moving remarks helped make the ceremony a meaningful tribute to those who serve our nation in uniform. Thank you to all veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, and military families for your commitment and service.
