City of Pittsburgh Careers: Your Bridge to Endless Opportunities!
About us
Pittsburgh was founded on November 27, 1758. The city was named by General John Forbes, in honor of British statesman William Pitt, the 1st Earl of Chatham. Early on, Pittsburgh played an important role in our country’s history. In the early 1800s, the city became known as the “Gateway to the West.” This nickname referenced the huge advantage Pittsburgh had by having the intersection of three major waterways. The Allegheny River and Monongahela River join together at what is known as the “point” to form the Ohio River. This intersection opened the gates for Pittsburgh to lead the way in the trade industry for products such as coal, timber, glass, natural gas, iron and limestone. By 1911, Pittsburgh manufactured half of the nation’s steel. Throughout the years, Pittsburgh has made multiple changes and overcome many obstacles. The city has moved from the steel industry to become a leader in healthcare, education, technology, and financial services. What were once heavily polluted streets and riverfronts, have been transformed to create the modern vibrant Pittsburgh one sees today. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is the sixth largest populated state in the United States. Pittsburgh is the second largest city in Pennsylvania and has an estimated of 310,000 people. The population consists of 51.9% females and 48.9% males, with the average age being 33. Pittsburgh, serves as the County Seat of Allegheny County which has an estimated population of 1.2 million. Pittsburgh serves as the principal city of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area, or Greater Pittsburgh. This 8 county area has an estimated population of 2.6 million. The City of Pittsburgh offers everything a person might be looking for in a home, with its wonderful shopping areas, great restaurants, and beautiful views. Pittsburgh is known for having more named neighborhoods than any American city. Ninety distinct communities create the culture of Pittsburgh. Contact talent@pittsburghpa.gov for all inquiries.

I really want to call attention to this one. If you’ve ever thought about getting into public service but assumed you didn’t have the “right” background, please read the equivalency section before you count yourself out. Two years of customer service/billing experience + a related degree can qualify you — or four years of qualifying experience without the related degree. Customer service counts, and finance/tax experience is preferred, not required. The salary and City benefits are strong, and I can personally say that Jen, Ian, and Jeff in Finance are such a fun group to work with. Jennifer Gula Ian Fitzgerald Jeffrey Hovis 🤸♂️ This could be a really great entry point into public service for someone who hasn’t realized yet that their experience qualifies them. 👇

Experience working with taxes is preferred, but it is not required. If you have strong customer service, billing, financial, administrative, account management, or related experience, we encourage you to take a closer look at the full posting before deciding whether you qualify. 💰 Starting salary: $53,715/year 🏥 Excellent medical benefits 🌴 Generous PTO 🎓 Education and experience equivalency accepted 📝 No written or performance Civil Service examination 🏛️ An opportunity to build a career in public service Sometimes your experience translates further than you realize. Congratulations to the 20 students who completed this year’s Learn and Earn and Teen CEO summer programs at the Carnegie Museums. CEO Katharine Eagan Kelleman joined City of Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O'Connor and museum leaders at yesterday’s end of summer celebration. The students spent the last six weeks immersed in workforce development programs and career-mentoring initiatives. They had the chance to explore a range of professional opportunities and make connections throughout the museums. Through PRT’s program sponsorship, the teens each received a summer bus pass for them to get to and from work. It opens new doors to the future while helping them build confidence and autonomy. “It’s a way we can help support our communities and give back,” Kelleman said. “We’re helping 20 Pittsburghers move on to a really great future. I think that’s awesome.” We’re proud to help support this growing initiative that’s building the next generation of leaders in the workforce. #PRT #PublicTransit #Partnership #Sponsorship #GrowingFutureLeaders #CarnegieMuseums #LearnAndEarn #SummerProgram
