Next-generation research is on a roll! We’re thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2026 Canadian Cancer Society Emerging Scholar Research Grants. 🔬 This funding supports early-career researchers across Canada in pursuing innovative, impactful, meaningful cancer science. With funding from this year’s Emerging Scholar Research Grants, 19 young investigators across the country will develop independent research programs and pursue high-quality research that makes a real difference to people affected by cancer. This year, we are supporting 17 bold projects in 5 provinces across the 4 pillars of health research (biomedical; clinical; health services; and social, cultural, environmental and population health). Nothing big gets solved by one person. To take on cancer, it takes all of us. It takes a society. 💛
About us
What does it take to take on cancer? It takes all of us. We all know the saying ‘It takes a village.’ But to take on cancer, it takes more than a village. We believe it takes a society. It takes a community – of patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, researchers, advocates, donors, supporters and volunteers – rallying together around a shared cause. Profound impact is possible when we combine our actions with the actions of others. Our goal at the Canadian Cancer Society is to inspire people of all ages, from all backgrounds and all parts of the country to come together to take on cancer’s biggest issues. Nothing big gets solved by one person. To take on cancer, it takes all of us. It takes a society. 💛

Recently, Prince Edward Island released a provincial alcohol strategy aimed at reducing alcohol-related harms and lowering cancer risk. It’s a positive step that puts prevention at the center of health policy. We also applaud a recent report from BC's Provincial Health Officer calling for better measures to prevent alcohol related harms like cancer. These are important moves as more and more Canadians choose to re-evaluate their relationship with alcohol and seek information to make informed choices about their health. Alcohol is a Group 1 carcinogen, and drinking any type of alcohol, whether beer, wine or spirits increases the risk of at least nine types of cancer. We know prevention works. Reducing alcohol-related harms can lower cancer risk and improve health outcomes. PEI has shown what’s possible when prevention is prioritized. Now is the time for governments across Canada to build on this momentum by increasing public awareness, reducing exposure to known risks and making healthier choices easier for everyone. At the Canadian Cancer Society, we will continue to advocate for strong, evidence-based policies that help reduce cancer risk. Preventing cancer is one of the most powerful ways we can improve health today, and together we can move closer to a future without cancer. Government of Prince Edward Island #ItTakesASociety

A more comfortable "home away from home" is on the way for Nova Scotians facing cancer. 🏡 We're grateful to the Government of Nova Scotia and the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund for investing $346,920 to help upgrade the heating and cooling systems at the Canadian Cancer Society's Lodge That Gives in Halifax. For more than 35 years, the Lodge has provided a welcoming place to stay for people travelling for cancer treatment and their loved ones. These upgrades will improve comfort for guests, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lower energy costs by an estimated 35%. This ensures more donor dollars can be directed toward life-saving research and vital support programs. Thank you to the Government of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities for supporting the people and families who rely on the Lodge That Gives. 💛 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eXZjNEDU #CancerSupport #NovaScotia #Sustainability #ClimateAction #ItTakesASociety

Cancer diagnosis and treatment can be especially complex for adolescents and young adults. Being at various stages in their lives often means this age group has unique needs, but this does not mean that their access to screening and care should be any more difficult. In January of 2022, Daphny Xavier Ramos Da Silva was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma on her cervix at the age of 31. Daphny grew up in Brazil and went to Montreal for college to study interior design and architecture. While studying in Montreal, she didn’t have a personal doctor and couldn’t get a pap-smear for around 4 years. Eventually she was able to get a pap-smear and after 6-months of waiting for the results, she was told they were abnormal, and was later diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma on her cervix. She received radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and brachytherapy as treatment and has been cancer-free since December 2023. When you donate to the Canadian Cancer Society, you contribute to advancing health equity for people like Daphny.

Immediate red card. 🟥 There isn't a "safe" amount of smoking. Even occasional smoking or social smoking can damage your lungs, and quitting lowers your risk of cancer. 🚭 Ready to quit or just thinking about it? Encouraging news from Ontario: https://lnkd.in/gMrfTnZA We're pleased to see the province's lung cancer screening program recognized among the world's best. While this progress is worth celebrating, too many people are still being diagnosed at later stages, and equity and patient experience metrics remain insufficiently tracked. The Pan-Canadian Lung Cancer Action Plan charts a path forward to expand access to screening, improve care and save more lives. Millennial comms vs Gen Z social 🤝 same message, different vibe. Yes, we’ve seen the “aesthetic” cigarette compilation videos that are trending right now. But no matter how it’s packaged, smoking still harms your health and increases your risk of developing at least 16 different types of cancer. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eA9kSK47 #GenZVsMillennial
