California Public Utilities Commission reposted this
This week, I started a new role as a policy advisor to California Public Utilities Commission President John Reynolds. I’m looking forward to be working for President Reynolds again, in an office that makes key decisions on affordability, energy safety and reliability, wildfire and climate impacts. These are kitchen table issues, even when the dockets seem dry: what shows up on utility bills, whether the lights stay on, or whether Californians can get decent broadband or phone service. It’s also bittersweet. I’m sad to leave the Office of Christine J Harada, one of the best (and most fun!) teams I’ve worked on at the Commission. But I’m excited for the next chapter. Pictured: President Reynolds and me in front of the century-old Railroad Commission safe.

The CPUC's Executive Director Leuwam Tesfai this week joined San Diego Supervisor Joel Anderson, Arevon, and GO-Biz for a ribbon-cutting for the 300 megawatt (MW) Nighthawk battery energy storage project! Nighthawk was made possible in part by the CPUC’s Integrated Resources Planning program, which directed utilities to procure 11,500 MWs of new capacity, including zero-emissions resources and energy storage, to support electric reliability as California transitions to a cleaner grid. Battery storage plays a critical role by storing energy when renewable generation is abundant and delivering it when demand and prices are highest, helping to affordably integrate more solar and wind while reducing reliance on fossil-fueled generation during peak evening hours. The CPUC’s Integrated Resource Planning and reliability efforts are driving California to build a reliable, affordable, and increasingly clean electric grid, including the recent milestone of almost 18,000 MWs of utility scale storage on the California grid. Projects like Nighthawk demonstrate that California’s ambitious clean-energy goals are achievable. Learn more about the CPUC's IRP process: www.cpuc.ca.gov/irp

Closing the digital divide requires more than building broadband infrastructure. Today, the CPUC approved nearly $32 million in California Advanced Services Fund grants that invest in three critical areas of broadband access: • Expanding fiber broadband to 590 previously unserved homes and businesses across rural California. • Bringing free broadband infrastructure to 315 affordable housing units. • Supporting digital literacy training and broadband adoption programs that will help thousands of Californians connect to affordable internet service. Together, these investments advance California's Broadband for All initiative by improving access to education, healthcare, employment opportunities, government services, and emergency communications. Today we approved the merger of Cox California Telcom to Charter Communications, subject to two settlement agreements and a comprehensive set of enforceable conditions designed to protect consumers, expand broadband access, and advance digital equity across California. The decision finds that, taken together, the approved measures ensure the transaction is in the public interest, delivers substantial benefits for California residents, businesses, and communities, and provides for strong regulatory oversight and accountability.
