Happy Birthday to the Central Valley Project! Throughout the years this complex, multi-purpose network of dams, reservoirs, canals, hydroelectric powerplants and other facilities has reduced flood risk, supplied water, produced electrical power, offered recreational opportunities, protected habitats, and enhanced water quality for communities across the Central Valley.

Our mission is to sustainably manage the water resources of California.
About us
In 1956, the Legislature passed a bill creating DWR to plan, design, construct, and oversee the building of the nation's largest state-built water development and conveyance system. Today, DWR protects, conserves, develops, and manages much of California's water supply including the State Water Project which provides water for 27 million Californians and 750,000 acres of farmland Working with other agencies and the public, DWR develops strategic goals, and near-term and long-term actions to conserve, manage, develop, and sustain California's watersheds, water resources, and management systems. DWR also works to prevent and respond to floods, droughts, and catastrophic events that would threaten public safety, water resources and management systems, the environment, and property. Balancing the State's water needs with environmental protection remains a long-term challenge.

Our habitats and ecosystems don’t only benefit the animals that live there but also the surrounding human communities! One of the many projects that cares for human and fish communities alike is the Merced River Irrigation Improvements and Fish Habitat Restoration Project. This project has modernized water delivery for agriculture and created a better environment for salmon. DWR’s Riverine Stewardship Program provided $8 million and the Facilitating Improvements to Systemwide Habitat (FISH) Program provided $10.4 million in funding and worked with the Merced Irrigation District, Cramer Fish Sciences, and private landowners to get this project completed. It's a win for people, the Merced River, and fish for generations to come.
