36 years of the ADA. A lasting reminder that everyone belongs. As Disability Pride Month continues, we’re reflecting on Sunday’s 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark piece of legislation that protected civil rights and created more opportunities for millions of people with disabilities. At Asphalt Green, we believe recreation and sport should be places where everyone belongs. Through Everyone Plays inclusive youth sports and fitness programming, we intentionally design experiences that welcome children with a wide range of strengths, abilities, communication styles, and support needs. By meeting athletes where they are and adapting in the moment, we create an environment where every participant can challenge themselves, build confidence, form friendships, and experience the joy of movement together. The ADA transformed what’s possible. $1.5 million. 3,000 more kids learning to swim. This morning at Lehman College, 21 Wave Makers students hit the water for a free lesson celebrating the New York City Council’s $1.5 million investment in Wave Makers this fiscal year. That funding means 58,500 more swim lessons for public school second-graders across all five boroughs. Every child deserves to know how to swim. We’re building the city that makes it happen. This past weekend, as we celebrated the end of our second Everyone Plays inclusive youth programming year, I’ve been thinking a lot about trust. Two years ago, I was given the opportunity to build something brand new at Asphalt Green. It's not often an organization trusts someone to create something from the ground up, and I don't take that lightly. I'm equally grateful to every family who has trusted us with their incredible athletes. Supporting your children, celebrating their strengths, learning alongside them, and watching their confidence grow is truly the best part of my job. And to every coach, instructor, coordinator, specialist, volunteer, and colleague who has joined me on this journey: thank you for believing in the vision. Inclusive programming only works because of the people who show up with curiosity, flexibility, joy, and a willingness to learn. When I look back at where we started just two years ago, I'm honestly blown away. This program year alone, our core Everyone Plays sports, fitness, and play classes & teams served 90+ neurodiverse athletes. What began as an idea has blossomed into classes, private lessons, competitive teams, school partnerships, staff trainings, workforce development opportunities, community events, and, most importantly, a network of families and staff who genuinely support one another. Thank you to everyone who has trusted me, trusted our team, and trusted what we're building together. I'm incredibly proud of what Asphalt Green Inclusive Programming has become in just two years, and even more excited for what's ahead. 💚
