Far from essential, but a welcome additional period in the world and its style

I managed to avoid the hype of this film; I did look forward to it, but it was only some time after release that I remembered it and sat to give it a go. I'm sort of conflicted by it, but generally I enjoyed it and appreciated it as an epilogue to the main series. The upside of it is that it does fill in blanks around a character, story, and world, that I'm already engaged in. It does this with the high production value and engaging style that Gilligan brings to his work, and he has a great eye for space and detail. Within this though it must be said that it could easily have been an hour to do the same thing, and even what constitutes events within this film, could be argued to be padding that doesn't add much. Certainly it is far from being the impressive expansion of Better Call Saul.

The style does help this, and it uses the long pauses and space well. Paul adds a lot too, turning in a great performance throughout and producing elements not in the dialogue. Even with this though it is not an essential film, and it is not one that can be watched without having watched the series - as it does rely on the viewer being already bought into it as a world, and already having affection for the characters. If you have this though, it is easy to overlook its weaker elements, and simply enjoy it for the confidence it has in itself, and its genuine interest in its characters.

    People are expecting too much

Everyone thought that El Camino would be better or equal to Breaking Bad; but the thing is you can't surpass perfection. Breaking Bad is undoubtedly the best or at least one of the best TV series of all time. Just because it isn't better than BrBa doesn't mean it sucks. This film is Jesse's Felina. Wonderful cinematography, great acting, great directing by Gilligan and fan favorite characters return. It however has slow pacing but all in all is a solid film.

Still a better ending than game of thrones

Thank you Vince for rising from your slumber to give us a second breaking bad finale that was still better than game of thrones.

    Epilogue

That's how you need to look at this film, it's an epilogue to "Breaking Bad." Though not needed this film is a wonderful final journey for the character of Jesse Pinkman (and Aaron Paul at his best) as well as a good moment of closure for fans as well as Vince Gilligan. If looked at on its own you'll find a nice crime thriller with great undertones of drama, and that's all you really need from this story.

Felina was the wrapping paper, El Camino is the ribbon.

It's sad to see the amount of people disappointed in this movie. I understand this is all subjective put personally I thought the movie was incredible. It was the perfect epilogue to the series and completed Jesse's story in such a satisfying way. It's the closure we as the audience could only desire, and more than a tribute to the series. So please, realize that this was never meant to be what Endgame was for the MCU, with crazy SFX and action non-stop, but rather Gilligan's masterpiece being fully finished.

Felina was the wrapping paper, this is the ribbon.

Aaron Paul, best known for his role as drug dealer Jesse Pinkman in "Breaking Bad," reprises his role in the follow-up film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. Who else has he played?

    • Goofs
Following Breaking Bad (2008), actor Jesse Plemons put on weight for his roles in Black Mass (2015) and season 2 of Fargo (2014); hence his weight as Todd in "El Camino" greatly differs from his weight during the final season of "Breaking Bad".

Jesse: You know he's not gonna be happy.

Mike Ehrmantraut: No. I suspect he won't. Only you can decide what's best for you, Jesse. Not him, not me.

      Jesse: I'm out.

      [pause]

Jesse: So what are you gonna do with all that money?

Mike Ehrmantraut: Same thing I do with all the other money. How 'bout you, teenage retiree? You'll be livin' the dream.

Jesse: Not sure I should stick around town.

      Mike Ehrmantraut: That's a start.

Jesse: Nothin' really keepin' me here. Where would you go? If you were me?

Mike Ehrmantraut: Doesn't matter, I'm not you.

Jesse: Seriously, come on. If you were my age? Just play along. Make some conversation.

      Mike Ehrmantraut: Alaska.

      Jesse: Yeah?

Mike Ehrmantraut: Yeah. If I were your age, startin' fresh... Alaska. It's the last frontier. Up there, you can be anything you want.

Jesse: Alaska. Start over. Start fresh.

      Mike Ehrmantraut: One could.

      Jesse: Put things right.

Mike Ehrmantraut: No. Sorry, kid, that's the one thing you can never do.
