Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan could soon be adding an Emmy to his ever-growing awards mantel.

Gold Derby has learned that HBO will submit The White Lotus Season 3 in 39 categories at the 2025 Emmys, including for Best Drama Series and 21 of its cast members.

Quan had an uncredited voice role as Kenny Nguyen in one episode of Mike White's buzzy vacation series. Kenny is the person who calls up Jason Isaacs' Timothy Ratliff while he was vacationing with his family in Thailand to discuss the financial crimes they committed together. The Everything Everywhere All at Once star is being submitted in Best Character Voice-Over Performance, which recognizes off-screen acting talent.

As for Isaacs, he's one of nine White Lotus stars campaigning in Best Drama Supporting Actor, along with Walton Goggins as Rick Hatchett, Sam Nivola as Lochlan Ratliff, Patrick Schwarzenegger as Saxon Ratliff, Tayme Thapthimthong as Gaitok, Jon Gries as "Gary"/Greg Hunt,...

“It Was Kind of a B*tch Move": Mike White Hits Back at 'The White Lotus' Composer's Criticisms
Image
The White LotusSeason 3 might be over, but it seems the drama didn't check out with the guests, with a bit of it now spilling over behind the scenes. Mere days before the finale aired, Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, the brain behind the viral, earworm theme music that became Seasons 1 and 2 signature, announced his exit, confessing that he intentionally timed it “for the shock and whatever.” Citing creative differences, the Emmy-winning composer revealed that he informed every crew member except Mike White, leaving the show creator in the dark until he eventually found out. White has now responded, offering his take on the situation and firing back at the composer's dramatic exit.

"I honestly don’t know what happened, except now I’m reading his interviews because he decides to do some PR campaign about him leaving the show," White began when asked about the composer's exit in his SiriusXM interview with Howard Stern.

‘The White Lotus’: Mike White Calls Composer “S**tting On” Him & Show Before Finale “A B**ch Move”

“The White Lotus” has finished its third season on Sunday, and given the massive ratings, a fourth season is most likely going to happen, but Chilean-Canadian composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer won’t be coming back after quitting the hit HBO series. Show creator Mike White has some colorful responses when it comes to that dust-up after the composer told the New York Times the two “already had our last fight forever” (suggesting that their working relationship is completely toast).

But apart from the show’s plot, something else has also surprised the show’s fans and even White himself. Apparently, White Lotus’ composer, Cristobal Tapia de Veer, won’t be returning for season 4.

He played a huge role in setting the eerie and dramatic soundtrack of the show. So, when news broke that he was stepping away from the project, many people online started questioning what really happened behind the scenes.

During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, White criticized the public nature of the composer’s exit and referred to the statements as “a bitch move.”

Tapia de Veer told The New York Times that his decision followed extended disagreements over changes to the series’ music, particularly during the third season. He said creative conflicts with White became increasingly difficult and were part of his reason for leaving the series.

“I honestly don’t know what happened, except now I’m reading his interviews because he decides to do some PR campaign about him leaving the show,” White said. “I don’t think he respected me. He wants people to know that he’s edgy and dark and I’m,...

The White Lotus creator, Mike White, had some choice words for the people who found season 3 of the HBO series to be slower than previous seasons. White said on the official show podcast, “There was complaining about how there’s no plot. That part I find weird. It never did… part of me is just like bro, this is the vibe. I’m world-building. If you don’t want to go to bed with me then get out of my bed. I’m edging you! Enjoy the edging. If you don’t want to be edged, then get out of my bed. Do you know what I mean? Image
The White Lotusstar Patrick Schwarzenegger has nothing but praise for his time on the popular HBO series. According to the actor, it presented him with "probably the most profound" moment of his acting career.

Speaking to Deadline, Schwarzenegger discussed the relative face-turn his The White Lotus character, Saxon, undergoes throughout the hit series' third season. Referring to one scene in particular in which Saxon watches Aimee Lou Wood's Chelsea walk away from him in disappointment, he said, "Well, that... it was actually my first week filming… but it's probably the most profound moment of my acting career."

Schwarzenegger went on to explain that the scene was "just kind of this internalizing moment," for series creator and writer-director Mike White. "He wants to have the audience left with... 'Will Saxon change?' Then you have him with the book on the boat. That's his full, full-circle moment. Although Chelsea's gone,...

‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Took a Wandering Path to a Satisfying Payoff: TV Review
Image
Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of “The White Lotus,” now streaming on Max.

In the beginning, you could almost forget “The White Lotus” was a kind of murder mystery. Back in 2021, Season 1 of the HBO drama put social farce first and deadly stakes a distant second, using a dead body as a hook only for creator Mike White to prove he didn’t need one to hold our attention. But as the series has grown from a pandemic lark into a juggernaut franchise, “The White Lotus” has leaned into the elements that define it across continents and star-studded casts. That includes the fatalities. Starting with a cold open that interrupted a meditation session with gunshots, no version of “The White Lotus” teased its violent end as aggressively as the Thailand-set Season 3, which concluded Sunday night. This motif may have aggravated audiences’ impatience with the story,...

Why The White Lotus Composer Won't Return For Season 4
Image
Sad news for anyone who loves to tongue trill along with the music of "The White Lotus": Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, the composer of HBO's addictive satire of wealth and whiteness, "The White Lotus," has told The New York Times in an interview that he will not be returning for season 4. There was already some fandom debate regarding the music for season 3, where Tapia de Veer's score that was used in season 1 and updated for season 2 was scrapped for something completely different at the start of the third season. The composer said the change was at the behest of show creator Mike White, who was envisioning something more like "background music ... a song that is more like something you would listen to in Ibiza, in some clubby place with a chill, sexy vibe." This meant replacing the catchy albeit unsettling trill sounds (or the "ooh-loo-loo-loos" for those who prefer phonetics) with the season 3 theme.

'The White Lotus' Composer Reveals He Will Not Return for Season 4
Image
Before the upcoming Season 3 finale, The White Lotus has just lost one of its key creative voices due to conflicts with series showrunner Mike White. The hit HBO drama, which has already landed a Season 4 renewal, will be without its composer moving forward. A startling piece of news for longtime fans, especially since the show's frenetic and iconic score does a lot to set the stage for the zany, twist-filled adventures of those staying at the White Lotus resort.

In an interview with The New York Times, The White Lotus composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer was honest about his creative differences with Mike White, which seemed to grow as each season was made. After having conflicting visions for the musical score, including a back-and-forth about the lack of the “ooh-loo-loo-loo” chorus in Season 3, Tapia de Veer said he let the editorial team know that he was not returning for Season 4. Of course,...

'We Had Our Last Fight Forever': Emmy Winner Leaves The White Lotus After Clashing With Creator
Image
The White Lotus is likely to sound a little different when its fourth season rolls around. The series' composer recently revealed they will not be returning.

Cristóbal Tapia de Veer scored the first and third seasons of The White Lotus, but creative differences will stop him from going forward with the hit HBO series, which was recently renewed for a fourth season. Speaking with The New York Times, de Veer described his creative disagreements with the show's creator and director, Mike White, which began back in Season 1. "I announced to the [editorial] team a few months ago that I was not coming back, that I was leaving," he said, adding that he was "sure" about the decision.

According to de Veer, White didn't like the first season's "Hawaiian Hitchcock" theme, and the two have remained at creative odds ever since. "I just stuck to what I was doing," de Veer said.

‘The White Lotus’ Season 4 Gets Devastating Update After Season 3 Disappointed Fans Over a Major Change
Image
The White Lotus has consistently delivered luxurious resorts, ridiculously wealthy and frequently terrible people, and an unsettling sense of impending doom lurking behind every infinity pool. Fans have come to expect biting satire, scandalous behavior, and existential crises served on a platter of five-star chaos.

But when Season 3 arrived, it wasn’t the intrigue or the unlikeable characters that sparked outrage, it was the music. Yes, the theme song, that beloved, eerie, borderline-deranged anthem of the show, had been altered. And for some viewers, it felt like their beloved chaos had been swapped for an overproduced beach club remix.

A still from The White Lotus | Credits: HBO

It was as if the show’s signature unease had been traded in for a pricey but forgettable spa treatment. While the luxury resorts remained, the spine-tingling sensation that something was very wrong had taken an extended vacation.

Why fans were disappointed with...

‘The White Lotus’ Composer Exits Series: Mike White Was ‘Saying No to Anything’
Image
“The White Lotus” Emmy-winning composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer has officially exited the series amid a dispute with creator Mike White. Tapia de Veer told the New York Times that a clash about the Season 3 theme song was in part the catalyst for the decision to leave the buzzy show.

White wanted “background music … a song that is more like something you would listen to in Ibiza, in some clubby place with a chill, sexy vibe,” according to Tapia de Veer, which did not have the same sound as the previous two other season theme songs.

“I texted the producer and I told him that it would be great to, at some point, give [audiences] the longer version with the ‘ooh-loo-loo-loos,’ because people will explode if they realize that it was going there anyway,” Tapia de Veer said. “He thought it was a good idea. But then Mike cut that — he wasn’t happy about that.

‘White Lotus’ Composer Says He Won’t Be Back for Season 4 Due to Tension With Mike White
Cristobal Tapia de Veer
“The White Lotus” may have already won three Emmy Awards for its iconic music and score — and that’s before the current third season has even become eligible — but composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer just revealed that he will not be checking back in for Season 4.

In fact, the theme song musician said he shared the news of his exit with the team behind the HBO anthology series months ago and his decision apparently all has to do with creative differences with creator Mike White: “We already had our last fight forever.”

“I feel like this was, you know, a rock ‘n’ roll band story,” Tapia de Veer told The New York Times in an interview out Wednesday. “This is like a rock band I’ve been in before where the guitar player doesn’t understand the singer at all.”

“It’s kind of weird right now because I...

'The White Lotus' Season 4 Loses a Major Player Ahead of the Season 3 Finale
Image
With The White Lotus Season 3 set to reach the finishing line in only a few days, fans are sure to be left wanting more and more. Unfortunately, the next chapter is not due for release anytime soon, and on top of that, we already have a not-so-pleasing update about a major player in the series courtesy of The New York Times. It appears that the acclaimed composer of the dark comedy Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, who has won three Emmy Awards for his work on the show, won’t return for Season 4, as confirmed in his interview with the outlet.

As described by Tapia de Veer, his sudden exit is due to “creative disagreements” withcreator and director Mike White that began during Season 1 of The White Lotus. As it happens, the show’s creative team constantly asked for music that was “more upbeat and less experimental” than what the composer wanted to produce.

‘White Lotus’ Composer Says He’s Quitting Show After Feuding With Mike White
Image
You’re not the only one with strong feeling about those missing “ooh-loo-loo-loos.”

The White Lotus composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer says he’s not returning for the HBO drama’s fourth season after feuding with creator Mike White over show’s score across its acclaimed three seasons.

The three-time Emmy winner — whose signature tribal score is practically a character on the series — told The New York Times that he is exiting the show.

“I announced to the [editorial] team a few months ago that I was not coming back, that I was leaving,” he said. “At some point, [White] heard about that.” Pressed whether was for certain leaving the series, de Veer replied, “Yeah, yeah. For sure.”

The composer claimed White originally didn’t like the first season’s “Hawaiian Hitchcock” theme with its famed “ooh-loo-loo-loos,” and their relationship has been a creative struggle ever since. “I just stuck to what I was doing,...

Image
Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, the composer who has written the theme songs for The White Lotus, is exiting the production after three seasons.

If you remember, the theme song for seasons one and two were similar, but season three featured a completely different song that really had the Internet upset for a bit. The main difference in the opening music for seasons 1-2 vs. 3 is the exclusion of the “ooh-loo-loo-loos” in the latest season. Well, the full cut of that song actually Does feature the “ooh-loo-loo-loos,” it just comes much later in the song.

‘The White Lotus’ Composer Quits Over ‘Fights’ as Jason Isaacs Hints at Trouble on Set
Image
The White Lotus is known for its drama and tension on-screen, but it appears things also got uncomfortably tense behind the scenes while filming the currently-airing third season. In a recent interview with the New York Times, the Emmy-winning composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer revealed he won’t be returning to the HBO series for Season 4 after clashing with the show’s creator, Mike White, over Season 3’s theme music. This comes amid complaints from viewers about the show getting rid of the iconic “ooh-loo-loo-loos” from the theme song. According to Tapia de Veer, White wanted the soundtrack of Season 3 to be more “background music … a song that is more like something you would listen to in Ibiza, in some clubby place with a chill, sexy vibe.” “I texted the producer and I told him that it would be great to, at some point, give [the fans] the longer version with the ooh-loo-loo-loos,...

‘White Lotus’ Composer Says He Won’t Return For Season 4 Following Creative Clashes With Mike White: “We Already Had Our Last Fight”
Image
White Lotus composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer has said season three of the HBO show will be his last in a revealing interview with The New York Times.

Tapia de Veer, who has won three Emmy Awards for his work on the hit show, has said that prolonged creative clashes with series creator and writer Mike White hit an apex during production of the third season, so he has decided not to return for another.

The Chilean-Canadian musician told The Times that he disagreed with White’s ideas for the show’s music from the start. White, he said, wanted something more akin to “background music” one might hear “in Ibiza, in some clubby place with a chill, sexy vibe” for season one.

Tapia de Veer said he just “stuck to what I was doing,” and the mantra for his creative process became “How do I pass all this weird music into the show?...

‘White Lotus’ Composer Says He Won’t Return for Season 4 After Creative Clash With Mike White: We’ve ‘Had Our Last Fight Forever’
Image
Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, the acclaimed composer of HBO’s “The White Lotus,” said he won’t be back for Season 4.

In an interview with the New York Times, the three-time Emmy winner said he and creator Mike White had different visions for the show’s theme song, which started in Season 1 and intensified during production of the currently airing third season. For the show’s first two seasons, Tapia de Veer’s eery theme song contributed to the show’s unsettling atmosphere with strange sounds including a recurring “ooh-loo-loo-loo” chorus. But the “ooh-loo-loo-loos” were cut for Season 3, igniting confusion.

This season, the composer said White had in mind more of “background music … a song that is more like something you would listen to in Ibiza, in some clubby place with a chill, sexy vibe.” Ultimately, for Season 3, the theme song became more of a traditional lounge tune (sans the...

One Of 2024's Best Horror Movies Is Taking Over Prime Video's Top Charts
Image
The demon from Parker Finn's "Smile" movies has a very peculiar mode of operations. It's largely invisible, and it can induce hallucinations in its chosen hosts. It typically appears to its victims as someone they know, or perhaps a stranger, but always wearing a very creepy smile. For a few weeks, the demon tortures its host with hallucinations, eventually taking over their bodies. Once possessed, the victim themselves would smile horrifyingly, while taking their own life. The self-slaughter is, as the demon dictates, performed in front of a witness. The witness, in seeing a smiling person kill themselves, gives them trauma that allows the demon to pass onto them. The cycle then repeats.

The "Smile" movies are very clearly about the way trauma can be passed from generation to generation, and how violence and self-harm can create a never-ending cycle. Despite the strangeness of the premise, the "Smile" movies are surprisingly scary,...

Get off the boat and turn around if you haven't watched the first two episodes of season 3 of "The White Lotus" — light spoilers lie ahead!

When season 3 of "The White Lotus" premiered on February 16, fans probably noticed that the theme song was ... really different. The same composer, Cristobal Tapia de Veer, has worked on all three seasons of Mike White's juicy HBO anthology series, but he's changed up the theme for each installment. Season 1, set in Hawai'i, featured a theme called (appropriately) "Aloha!" Season 2, which was set on the Italian isle of Sicily, got its own tune, "Renaissance" — which was pretty universally adored by fans — and now, we've got "Enlightenment," the season 3 theme that fits the installment's new setting, Thailand. So what was his inspiration for "Enlightenment?" Tiktok and cat sounds.

According to an article in Variety, Tapia de Veer was influenced by some unlikely sources for the show's third season.

What’s Up With the ‘White Lotus’ Theme Song? The Show’s Music Supervisor Explains

When music supervisor Gabe Hilfer was asked to join the White Lotus team for the show’s second season, he jumped at the chance.

“It’s cool to be a part of a project that is water-cooler talk,” Hilfer tells Rolling Stone. “It’s a decent amount of work and we use a lot of music, but it is such a fulfilling show because it’s just really good and everybody is a professional.”

But working on a zeitgeisty show with a passionate fan base means that water-cooler talk can...

Why 'The White Lotus' Theme Song Changed for Season 3
Image
Fans are devastated that The White Lotus‘ theme song for season three has completely changed.

Composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer, who wrote the season 2 theme song, “Renaissance,” shared that he thought it was initially “terrible.” It eventually became a huge hit among fans, however.

Keep reading to find out more…

He created the season 2 theme after The White Lotus was renewed by HBO, and creator Mike White requested some Italian elements be put in to match with the show’s new setting.

Cristobal told Variety, “I took a little time to make an intro that would have those elements with things like a little harp, and some opera singing and some orchestral beats…And once I had that intro I started figuring out how to bring back the elements that are recognizable from the first season, which are the voices. [The original singer] wasn’t there when I made the demo but I did take her voice.

‘The White Lotus’ Returns with Top-Tier Performances: Episode 1 Review
Image
How is the White Lotus still in business? The luxury resort that functions as a setting for each season of Mike White’s eponymous HBO series has blood on its hands — and that doesn’t change in Season 3, Episode 1: “Same Spirits, New Forms.”

While other seasons opened with the discovery or body or reveal that someone died, Season 3’s cold open unfolds at the White Lotus in Thailand, where Zion’s (Nicholas Duvernay) meditation is interrupted by gunshots. He’s immediately terrified for the safety of his mother — as are all viewers who put together that this is Belinda’s (Natasha Rothwell) son — and then a body floats toward him.

It’s shrewd of White to start the season this way, immediately delineating Season 3’s death from its predecessors. It could still have been an accident, but the implied violence and visibly widespread fear add new tension (as does...

The White Lotus Season 3, Episode 1 Review
Image
The following contains spoilers for The White Lotus Season 3, Episode 1, "Same Spirits, New Forms."

In the first episode of season 3 of The White Lotus, one character tells another, “This is so on brand for you, to be a victim of your own decisions.” When the audience gets immersed in this new world of the now-adored luxury hotel property, they might wonder if this little line was subconsciously commenting on some of the season’s pitfalls. After all, not all that glitters can do so forever — but whether the series has lost its sparkle lies in what’s to come.

Season 3 of The White Lotus centers on a new group of guests staying at an exclusive (and expensive) White Lotus property for a week-long getaway, this time in the beautiful jungles of Thailand. But this season, it seems writer-director Mike White’s vision might be becoming significantly less alluring. With a...

‘The White Lotus’ Review: Scathingly Good Acting Helps Rescue Thailand-Set Season 3 of Mike White’s HBO Series From Fatigue
Image
If you bemoan the reboot/remake culture in film and television for long enough, somebody will inevitably bring up theater.

Why, pray tell, is it creatively bankrupt to rehash Doogie Howser, M.D., or American Gigolo, but perfectly acceptable for productions of Macbeth or Oedipus or Oklahoma! to come and go in regular cycles? You don’t watch a new production of Romeo & Juliet to see if those crazy underaged lovers will make it this time, but to experience how a new director and cast put a personal stamp on the material — and how, through finding distinctive elements within a familiar story, you can still be moved or astonished.

It may be worth considering that when approaching Mike White’s new season of The White Lotus.

The HBO satirical anthology — miscategorized for Emmy purposes as a “drama” — returns this weekend after an absence of more than two years, and it...
