The 15 Best ‘Die Hard’ Knockoffs Ever
Image
There are lots of great movies out there, but only a few can claim to have created their own genre. John McTiernan’s action classic “Die Hard” is one of them. Sure, it didn’t come from out of nowhere — the premise of villains taking hostages, and a hero taking them down from within dates back at least as far as the Oscar-winning John Huston thriller “Key Largo,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall — but it put all the pieces together in one lucrative, easy to copy framework. And boy, did Hollywood copy it. Over and over and over again.

Yes, in the wake of “Die Hard” there have been borderline countless riffs on the same basic premise: Bad guys take over a thingy, a good guy just happens to be at the thingy, the good guy foils all the bad guys’ plans. Just change the thingy, and/or change the heroes/villains,...

Paramount pushes family films, adult comedies in CineEurope slate presentation
Image
Paramount will lean into the comedy genre with its upcoming slate of titles, presented yesterday (June 18) at CineEurope.

On panel sessions at the trade convention, cinema operators have been calling for more-rounded film slates, and decrying the lack of adult-skewing comedies that in the past have been supplied by the likes of The Hangover, Ted, Judd Apatow productions and Adam Sandler vehicles.

In upcoming months, Paramount will release both The Naked Gun and Scary Movie 6.

Announced is Meet The Parents 4, starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, which Paramount has for international markets and Universal in North America. Ariane Grande will join the cast.

Image
Star Trek and SpongeBob SquarePants are two of the top five most popular franchises on Paramount+. Now, Collider has an exclusive first look at a new ad that takes the two properties and squishes them together. You may never look at Star Trek or SpongeBob the same way after this universe-shattering crossover.

In the new ad, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), commands the "Patrick Starship Enterprise," a gigantic starship resembling everyone's favorite dim-witted starfish, complete with the unmistakable voice of Bill Fagerbakke. Spock (Ethan Peck) and Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence) survey the stars, while Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) man the controls...which also double as a grill for Krabby Patties. Finally, the man (or sponge) of the hour arrives, as Tom Kenny's SpongeBob beams aboard, clad in a square Starfleet uniform. Soon, the whole thing is revealed to be the result of Uhura having a very strange dream.

Animated Sequels Are Back, Led by Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2,’ but Pixar Counters with Original ‘Elio’
Image
It’s another year of high-profile animated sequels, led by Disney’s “Zootopia 2,” DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys 2,” and Nickelodeon/Paramount’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Square Pants,” and the “Smurfs” film.

But there are plenty of attention-grabbing non-sequels in 2025: “Pixar’s intergalactic “Elio,” DreamWorks’ “Dog Man,” Neon’s French “Arco,” Sony Pictures Classics’ “A Magnificent Life,” Sylvain Chomet’s biopic about French author-filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, and Sony Picture’s “Scarlet,” the latest anime from Mamoru Hosoda (“Belle”).

In addition, Netflix delivers another diverse slate: “In Your Dreams,” “KPop Demon Hunters” (with Sony Pictures), Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2D adult comedy, “Fixed,” “Lost in Starlight” (the streamer’s first Korean-language animated film), “Plankton: The Movie” (with Nickelodeon), and “The Twits” adapted from Roald Dahl.

Also, there are three Oscar-qualifying holdovers from 2024: “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” “The Colors Within,” and “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.

Why Nickelodeon Banned The Classic SpongeBob SquarePants Episode Mid-Life Crustacean
Image
Since its series premiere in 1999, "SpongeBob SquarePants" has honed the art of weaving brisk, humorous shorts to fill out its 30-minute episodic timeslot. Most of these mini-arcs that feature our favorite yellow sea sponge are self-contained adventures that never fail to entertain. The series' tone has always been lighthearted and happy-go-lucky — pitch-perfect for children growing up watching it — but slivers of adult humor have always strewn throughout with an older audience in mind. Most of it is pretty harmless, such as the silly dolphin noises in the "Sailor Mouth" episode that are meant to be a stand-in for cuss words, or SpongeBob waking up extremely hungover after drinking too many "milkshakes" at a bar in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie." While subtle jokes of this variety will inevitably (and hopefully) fly over a child's head, these subject matters often take an inappropriate turn, inviting controversy and criticism.

‘Squarepants’ Meets Square Burgers: A Real-Life ‘SpongeBob’ Krabby Patty Is Coming to Wendy’s
Image
The hot dog imbalance — eight buns in a bag to 10 dogs in a pack — is an oft-spoken-of Americana annoyance, but it’s not the only bread-to-meat ratio that just doesn’t make sense. We’re talking, of course, about Wendy’s square hamburgers served on a round roll. Classic IndieWire stuff.

Wendy’s and Paramount are hammering out a deal to launch a new menu item at participating Wendy’s restaurants: the Krabby Patty. Yes, the sandwich of preference from the “SpongeBob Squarepants” cartoons is coming above sea level, a source confirmed to IndieWire. And you thought saucey nuggs would be the breakout Wendy’s menu item of 2024.

In the world of the Nickelodeon sea-sponge, the Krusty Krab is essentially the Wendy’s of the sea. It is also the employer of SpongeBob and Squidward. The Krab’s signature sandwich, the Krabby Patty, is about to wash ashore at your local...

To celebrate a quarter century of “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Nickelodeon pulled out all the stops at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, starting with an epic Hall H panel.

Mark Hamill made a surprise appearance to reveal that he’d be voicing The Flying Dutchman in the upcoming fourth SpongeBob film, “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants,” out in 2025. “He’s the most fearsome goofball pirate you’ve ever seen. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Making of the Music of Bikini Bottom
Image
This article is presented by

For the musical staff at SpongeBob SquarePants, every morning begins with the potential to bring “The Best Day Ever.” That song was co-written by Andy Paley and the voice of SpongeBob, Tom Kenny. It debuted in the credits of the 2004 feature film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and captures the anticipatory joy of riding the Bikini Bottom wave.

“That is SpongeBob’s philosophy of life,” Kenny tells Den of Geek. “He jumps out of bed singing, ‘This is gonna be the best day ever.’ Sometimes it’s not. But he goes to bed and believes tomorrow is gonna be.”

The sentiment still reverberates because the songwriters craft lasting tunes. The sounds and music of the beloved animated series have broadened its appeal and prolonged its impact. As Paley explains, “We aim for two things: songs that can be enjoyed outside SpongeBob, and records that, if you...

“Andrea Romano asked if I minded reading for Lex Luthor”: Superman: The Animated Series Almost Replaced Tim Daly With a DC Villain Actor
Image
Lex Luthor is one of the most celebrated villains of all time. Superman’s arch-nemesis is a genius, billionaire, and one of the most power-hungry characters in the comic-book world. The legendary character was portrayed to perfection by actor Clancy Brown in the Tim Daly starring animated show Superman: The Animated Series.

Bruce Timm’s follow-up to his Batman: The Animated Series was a Superman for a new generation as it became an influential piece of media for many other adaptations. It saw a much more vulnerable Superman, who did not smile or perpetually be optimistic like he was in the comics. However, Superman would have been completely different as Brown reportedly first auditioned for the role of Clark Kent in the show.

"That Was A Real Mistake": SpongeBob Celebrity Guest Expresses Regret Over Their Appearance On Show
Image
Pink regrets recording the SpongeBob song "We've Got Scurvy," calling it a "real mistake." "We've Got Scurvy" was a standout hit from SpongeBob SquarePants' first decade and featured on the compilation album SpongeBob's Greatest Hits. Despite Pink's regret, "We've Got Scurvy" is considered one of the show's most clever and unhinged musical numbers, along with other iconic songs like "This Grill Is Not a Home" and "Ripped Pants."

SpongeBob SquarePants celebrity guest star Pink says she regrets recording an iconic SpongeBob song. Pink appears as a pirate in SpongeBob SquarePants season 6, episode 23, “Truth or Square.” This special episode celebrates the 10th anniversary of the classic animated series, hosted by live-action pirate Patchy the Pirate. Now, the show is about to mark its 25th anniversary, and will soon return for SpongeBob SquarePants season 15 in 2024.

Pink expresses regret towards recording the “Truth or Square” song, “We’ve Got Scurvy.” In an...

‘Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie’: Everything We Know So Far
Image
SpongeBob SquarePants is Nickelodeon's longest-running series, with 277 episodes. Still, its impact on cinema has also proven its status as one of the greatest children's shows ever made. SpongeBob is beloved worldwide, and for a good reason, as its fresh animation style and humor have gone on to stand the test of time. The series first hit the silver screen in 2004 with The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Two more sequels followed: The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water in 2015 and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run in 2020. It is now a well-established film franchise and a television one and is returning to our screens very soon. However, it won't be the world's most famous sponge at the helm of this narrative. It will be SpongeBob's close friend Sandy that heads this feature. So, with the vast fan base terribly excited, here is everything we know about Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie.

I'm Ready, I'm Ready: New SpongeBob SquarePants Movie On The Way [CinemaCon 2023]
Image
Is this the Krusty Krab? No, this is the sound of a brand new "SpongeBob SquarePants" being announced. Paramount and Nickelodeon (like every other studio) are in the business of milking their popular franchises for all the nostalgia they're worth, and there is arguably no bigger Nickelodeon character than SpongeBob SquarePants.

Since the moment it premiered back in 1999, the animated comedy series created by Stephen Hillenburg has been the biggest show in the network's history. In fact, the character recently inspired a new character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, almost 30 years and 300 episodes later, there's as big a chance of "SpongeBob" going away and stopping as there is a chance the titular sponge stops working at the Krusty Krab.

There have been three "SpongeBob" movies, with the original "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" serving as a sort of series finale according to Hillenburg. Following his departure from the show, two new films were released,...

‘Kung Fu Panda’ Filmmaker Mark Osborne Calls for Honesty, Creative Freedom in Animation
Image
Annie and César-winning and Oscar nominated animation specialist filmmaker Mark Osborne delivered an inspirational masterclass to a rapt crowd of animators and students at the International Film Festival of India, Goa on Tuesday.

Osborne began with a presentation on the process behind the 2015 film “The Little Prince,” based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved 1943 novella, and then shared his views on how budding animators could approach their craft.

“Figure out what’s important to you, find out what’s meaningful to you and try to tap into it, because if it’s meaningful to you, and it’s honest, it’s going to be meaningful to an audience, you’re going to find your audience. And if you’re going to be honest, and not just tell a story that’s copying another story or trying to do something like someone else, it’s that honesty that creates fresh takes on things and fresh approaches,...

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ and ‘SpongeBob’ Movies Get 2025 Release Dates From Paramount
Image
Paramount has announced 2025 release dates for upcoming animated movies about “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

The untitled “SpongeBob” movie has a May 23, 2025, release date and is produced by Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation.

The untitled “Avatar: The Last Airbender” movie is coming Oct. 10, 2025, and is produced by Nickelodeon Animation, Paramount Animation and Avatar Studios. Both are getting wide releases.

Fans of the Nickelodeon series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” — not to be confused with James Cameron’s blue N’avi “Avatar” movies — have been patiently waiting for a big-screen adaptation ever since the formation of Avatar Studios was announced in 2021. Series creators Michael Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, who stepped away from Netflix’s upcoming live-action “Avatar” adaptation, created the animation studio to expand the worlds of the main series and its sequel “The Legend of Korra.”

In June, it was revealed that not one, but three standalone “Avatar” films...

Is ‘Marcel the Shell’ Animated Enough for the Oscars?
Image
.

A24’s acclaimed stop-motion/live-action hybrid “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” could be the wild card in the animated feature Oscar race — going up against such early favorites as Pixar’s “Turning Red,” Disney’s “Strange World,” and Netflix’s two stop-motion behemoths: “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” (the latter being the lone animated feature premiering at TIFF).

And why not? The feature debut from director Dean Fleischer Camp (adapting a series of shorts he created with “Marcel” star Jenny Slate), has been embraced by critics for its charm, wit, inventive stop-motion, and its adorable breakout star. The one-inch anthropomorphic shell (voiced by Slate) lives with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and develops a friendship with doc filmmaker Dean (Fleischer Camp), who moves in and films Marcel’s daily activities, which go viral. Marcel, who’s in search of his lost family,...

‘SpongeBob Squarepants’ Spinoff ‘The Patrick Star Show’ in the Works to Nickelodeon
Image
Patrick Star is about to become the star of his own show.

A “SpongeBob Squarepants” spinoff series centered around SpongeBob’s pink friend is in the works at Nickelodeon, Variety has confirmed with sources. “The Patrick Star Show” will see Bill Fagerbakke continue to voice the character.

The series will be a deep dive on Patrick and his family, as the friendly starfish hosts a talk show. Precisely which other “SpongeBob” actors will be reprising their characters for this new series is unclear, however, sources say it will introduce several new characters voiced by new actors to the “SpongeBob” underwater universe.

A representative for Nickelodeon declined to comment.

This marks the second “SpongeBob” spinoff to float its way to Nickelodeon, following in the spongesteps of “Kamp Koral,” a CG-animated prequel series which was greenlit over a year ago. That series, which is set to premiere on CBS All Access next year,...

Clancy Brown, Lori Alan, Rodger Bumpass, Mary Jo Catlett, Bill Fagerbakke, Tom Kenny, Carolyn Lawrence, Mr. Lawrence, and Jill Talley in Bob Esponja (1999)
“The Patrick Star Show,” a “SpongeBob SquarePants” animated spinoff starring SpongeBob’s best friend, Patrick, is in the works at Nickelodeon.

On the new series, the pink starfish will continued to be voiced by the character’s longtime “SpongeBob” voice actor Bill Fagerbakke, a person with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.

Reps for Nickelodeon declined to comment Monday.

The project is not the only upcoming “SpongeBob” offshoot series, joining the previously announced prequel “Kamp Koral.” That show — which recently moved from Nickelodeon to CBS All Access, where it will debut next year as part of the rebranded service — will see a 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer at the eponymous camp. In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral.

All Eight ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Are Leaving HBO Max Next Month
Image
Three months after HBO Max launched with the full set of eight core “Harry Potter” movies, the octet of titles about the Boy Who Lived will be rolling off the WarnerMedia service in August.

Fans of Harry Potter’s Wizarding World have a little over five weeks left to binge on the eight films based on J.K. Rowling’s novels on HBO Max, with the titles expiring on Aug. 25, WarnerMedia announced Monday.

Rowling has recently become embroiled in a firestorm of criticism over her comments regarding transgender identity. A source familiar with the status of the Harry Potter films on HBO Max told Variety that the removal of the movies from streaming service stems from standard licensing terms that are unrelated to the controversy.

At the same time, HBO Max in August also will be adding films including the slate of DC’s Batman movies — including the 1989 “Batman,” “Batman & Robin,...

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Release Pushed to December
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” a sequel to Tom Cruise’s 1986 classic, is the latest summer movie to vacate its release date as theaters remain closed to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The anticipated follow-up was scheduled to debut June 24 and will now release Dec. 23, 2020.

As part of the release shake-up, Paramount has also moved “A Quiet Place Part II” — which the studio postponed last month — to Sept. 4, 2020. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” an animated adventure based on the absorbent underwater fry cook, was originally slated to hit theaters on May 22 and will now bow July 31, 2020. Meanwhile sci-fi fantasy film “The Tomorrow War,” previously scheduled for Dec. 25, 2020, is now undated.

Those films join a growing list of tentpoles that were pulled from release because of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent closure of multiplexes. Sony recently delayed most of its summer slate, including “Morbius” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Paramount gave an early look at its “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” tv spot that will debut ahead of the Super Bowl. Since even pre-game commercials are expensive, the new clip gives SpongeBob just 26 seconds to describe everything that happens in his new film.

“There’s fast cars, flashbacks, Snoop Dogg, robots, a wise sage, churros,” everyone’s favorite cartooned sponge rattles off. “The only thing missing is Gary.”

In the animated movie, out in theaters May 22, SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star venture out of Bikini Bottom and head to the Lost City of Atlantic City on a rescue mission to save SpongeBob’s trustee snail Gary.

Behind the Business of ‘SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout’
Clancy Brown, Lori Alan, Rodger Bumpass, Mary Jo Catlett, Bill Fagerbakke, Tom Kenny, Carolyn Lawrence, Mr. Lawrence, and Jill Talley in Bob Esponja (1999)
Nickelodeon’s hit “SpongeBob Square-Pants” moved out of its own adolescence earlier this year when the animated series turned 20 in May. But the celebration of the modern classic about under-the-sea adventures is continuing well into next year as a “love letter” to the show’s creator, says Ramsey Naito, Nickelodeon executive vice president of animation production and development.

“Time flies,” says Naito. “I remember meeting Stephen Hillenburg in 1998 when we were both getting coffee at a coffee machine when he was just starting.”

Hillenburg, who was a marine biology teacher before stepping into the world of animation, created “SpongeBob” based on some of his own experience seeing children’s awe at sponges and starfish. The series became Nickelodeon’s first original Saturday morning cartoon, debuting in May 1999. Hillenburg unfortunately passed away from complications from Als in November 2018 at age 57, before getting to see his beloved series hit this milestone — festivities...

Nickelodeon’s Ramsey Naito Talks ‘SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout’ at Annecy
Annecy, France — Having traveled from the floor of Bikini Bottom to the shores of Lake Annecy in France, SpongeBob SquarePants is kicking off his 20th year at Europe’s most important animation festival with a Nickelodeon panel and accompanying sneak peek of the upcoming special “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout.”

A few lucky Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival attendees who waited online to score tickets for the rapidly sold-out panel will be the first in the world to see the special, which will release worldwide on the slimy orange network on July 12.

The accompanying panel will include Nickelodeon and SpongeBob vets including co-executive producers Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller, producer Jennie Monica and writer Kaz Prapuolenis.

The special is a mix of traditional 2D animated and live action scenes, on a par with 2004’s “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,” and even features a cameo from one of the film’s live action superstars.

SpongeBob SquarePants Prequel Series Set for Nickelodeon
Joseph Baxter Jun 4, 2019

The underwater exploits of SpongeBob’s summer camp childhood exploits will be the focus of a new Nickelodeon prequel series.

SpongeBob SquarePants has plenty of projects – a year-long birthday bash, a special featuring the voice cast in live-action form, another movie and even prospective spinoff shows – on his franchise backlog during the porous Pollyannaish pineapple-dweller’s 20th anniversary. However, Nickelodeon has another entry to offer, a prequel series set to focus on a 10-year-old version of the character during a stay at summer sleepaway camp.

Tentatively titled Kamp Koral, Nickelodeon has officially greenlit the young-Sponge-Bob prequel series for a 13-episode run, reports Deadline. Unlike the mothership show, the prequel will manifest as a CGI-concocted series, though will remain 2D. According to the description, the prequel will focus on SpongeBob’s stay at “the craziest camp in the kelp forest,” Kamp Koral, where he’ll spend the summer “building underwater campfires,...

Nickelodeon Orders ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ Prequel "Kamp Koral"
Tom Kenny in Bob Esponja (1999)
Nickelodeon has ordered a prequel series to its longrunning cartoon, “SpongeBob SquarePants” that will follow a young Spongebob during sleepaway camp.

The series, titled “Kamp Koral” will see a 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer the eponymous camp. In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral. “SpongeBob SquarePants” Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller will co-executive produce the prequel.

Oh, and it won’t be a 2-dimensional cartoon like the flagship “SpongeBob,” but instead computer-generated animation. This won’t be the first time “SpongeBob” gets the 3-D treatment. The 2015 movie “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” was also CG-animated.

The series is one of multiple planned spinoffs for the “SpongeBob” universe, which include potential standalone stories...

‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ CG-Animated Prequel Series ‘Kamp Koral’ Greenlighted By Nickelodeon
Exclusive: Nickelodeon has given a 13-episode series order to Kamp Koral (working title), a spinoff of the network’s signature series SpongeBob SquarePants. While the mothership is a classic 2D cartoon, the offshoot will be a CG-animated series, which serves as a prequel to SpongeBob. It introduces 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants during his summer at sleepaway camp.

Earlier this year, Nickelodeon, under new president Brian Robbins, announced it is developing for the first time ever spinoff projects for SpongeBob SquarePants characters. Kamp Koral marks the first such project to get a green light. It is slated to begin production in June at Nickelodeon’s facilities in Burbank.

In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral. SpongeBob SquarePants‘ Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller co-executive produce the prequel.
