National Highways said workers had broken through the underpass, allowing sunlight to shine through the tunnel.
A post on the National Highways: South-East Facebook page said: “There’s light at the end of the tunnel! We've reached a major milestone on the M3 Junction 9 improvement scheme, with the new A34 underpass now breaking through from end to end.
“For the first time, you can see daylight all the way through the tunnel, a fantastic sight for the teams who have worked so hard to get us here.

“It's a big step forward in a scheme that will improve journeys, ease congestion and enhance connections between the M3 and A34 for years to come.
“A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this breakthrough happen. Onwards to the next milestone!”
As previously reported, the work is taking place as part of the wider M3 Junction 9 scheme.
The scheme will widen the junction and create free-flowing links between the M3 and the A34, with two new gyratory bridges intended to reduce congestion, improve safety and air quality.
National Highways estimates that the wider scheme will cost between £190 million and £210 million.
