Dr. Douglas R. Ewing is a highly accomplished, board-certified surgeon specializing in bariatric and minimally invasive general surgery. He serves as the Section Chief of Laparoscopic Surgery, as the Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program, and as the Medical Director of the Center for Weight Loss and Metabolic Health at Hackensack University Medical Center.

His surgical practice is dedicated to providing advanced, minimally invasive solutions for a wide range of conditions. As a specialist in bariatric surgery, he performs both primary and complex revisional weight loss procedures. His general surgery expertise includes the repair of all types of hernias (inguinal, ventral, hiatal), treatment for gallbladder disease, and surgery for acid reflux (GERD).

Dr. Ewing’s distinguished training began with an undergraduate degree with honors from Harvard College. He then earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his general surgery residency at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York and his fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Dr. Ewing holds the rare distinction of being board-certified in both Surgery and Obesity Medicine, making him uniquely qualified to offer a full spectrum of care for weight management. As the Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship, he is a dedicated mentor responsible for training the next generation of advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgeons.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What are the benefits of minimally invasive surgery?
It's surgery done through tiny cuts instead of one large one. This means you'll have less pain, smaller scars, and get back to your normal life much faster.

2. I have a hernia. Does it need to be repaired?
The most common sign is a bulge in your belly or groin. Hernias don't fix themselves and can get worse, so surgery is needed to prevent a serious problem where tissue gets stuck in the hernia.

3. What does it mean that you are board-certified in Obesity Medicine?
It means that in addition to being a surgeon, I am also a medical expert in treating obesity. This allows me to offer a full range of options, including non-surgical treatments, to create the best plan for you.

4. How can surgery help my acid reflux (GERD)?
Often, chronic reflux is caused by a physical problem called a hiatal hernia. While pills help with the burning feeling, they don't fix the cause. We can perform a minimally invasive surgery to correct the issue, providing a long-term solution.

5. How can I schedule an appointment with Dr. Ewing?
You can schedule an appointment with Dr. Ewing by calling one of his HMH Advanced Laparoscopic Associates offices in Bergen or Hudson counties.
