Thomas the Tank Engine taking on water at Peterborough Nene Valley station
Thomas the Tank Engine is in reality a Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T locomotive (no. 1800) built in 1947. It was originally employed at the British Sugar Corporation (BSC) factory in Peterborough. The locomotive was acquired by the Peterborough Railway Society (PRS) in September 1973.
The Nene Valley Railway (NVR) regards this locomotive as the "official" Thomas because it was named as such by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry, the creator of the fictional Thomas the Tank Engine, in 1971. It is now deployed on passenger services mainly for special events. On this occasion, it was operating services to mark the 80th anniversary of the publication of the first Thomas the Tank Engine book in 1945.
The NVR was opened by the PRS in 1974. It began operating passenger services in June 1977 and now ranks as one of the United Kingdom's leading heritage railways. The seven-and-a-half-mile route runs between Peterborough Nene Valley and Yarwell Junction. The NVR is a popular venue for location filming and has appeared in the James Bond movies "Octopussy" and "GoldenEye" and the BBC television drama series "Secret Army" and "Casualty" amongst others.
