The photo was taken from the promenade by Groyne 54, and it shows the sloping seaward face of the stockpile, which in a number of places has a grooved surface. While common sense suggests that all the beach material is the same colour in this area, it does seem that the colour of the stockpile appears to vary between lighter shades at the foot of the feature while darker hues predominate higher up. While this observation is easy to make, the reason for it is much less obvious.
