Giant Redwoods in Dukeshouse Wood
The Giant Redwood (Sequioadendron giganteum) is amongst the tallest tree species in the country. It cannot reproduce naturally in conditions in Britain, but many were planted here in late Victorian times as the ultimate botanical status symbol. The specimens seen here are just three of a number of such trees lining the old driveway to Dukeswood House. The other, more slender, trees are Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), another species renowned for its height.
