Class 66 locomotive at the former level crossing on Foxcovert Road, Werrington
This Class 66 diesel-electric locomotive no. 66716 "Locomotive & Carriage Institution" operated by GB Railfreight (GBRf) is seen here passing the former level crossing on Foxcovert Road, which links Werrington on the northern periphery of Peterborough with the villages of Glinton and Peakirk. The crossing is located on the Great Northern Great Eastern (GNGE) line, an 86-mile (134.4-kilometre) route connecting Peterborough with Lincoln and Doncaster.
Foxcovert Crossing was closed to motor traffic in the 1980s. A footbridge with ramps for cyclists was erected in 2014 to replace the previous pedestrian gates.
No. 66716 was named in May 2011 to mark the centenary of the establishment of the Locomotive & Carriage Institution. The naming ceremony was held at Wansford station on the Nene Valley Railway (NVR).
The Institution organises visits for its members and lectures covering all areas of the present-day railway industry as well as railway history and preservation. Originally known as the Institution of Locomotive Inspectors and Foremen, it adopted its current name in 1931. Past presidents of the Institution included the eminent locomotive designer Sir Nigel Gresley (1876-1941).
