British Railways Peppercorn Class A1 Pacific steam locomotive at Peterborough North station (1959)
This ex-London and North Eastern Railways (LNER) Peppercorn Class A1 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive hauling Pullman stock is seen here approaching Platform 2 at Peterborough North station on a rather overcast day in February 1959. It is heading southbound on the East Coast Main Line (ECML).
The locomotive appears to be no. 60117 "Bois Roussel" hauling the "Yorkshire Pullman" service from Harrogate to London King's Cross. No. 60117 was built in Doncaster in October 1948 and was withdrawn from service in June 1965.
A total of 49 Peppercorn Class A1s were built in Doncaster and Darlington between 1948 and 1949 with the first A1 entering service in August 1948. They were ordered by LNER although, by the time of their delivery, LNER had been nationalised under the auspices of British Railways with effect from January 1st., 1948. So-called because they were designed by LNER's chief mechanical engineer Arthur Peppercorn (1889-1951), the locomotives were employed to haul heavier passenger trains on the ECML.
The Peppercorn Class A1s were withdrawn from service by BR between October 1962 and June 1966. All of the original locomotives had been scrapped by September 1966 with none being preserved. A brand new Class A1 (no. 60163 "Tornado") was however completed to Peppercorn's original design by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust in 2008, ranking it as the first new steam locomotive to be built in the United Kingdom since 1960. "Tornado" was deployed on both mainline rail excursions and on heritage railways between 2009 and 2022 prior to being overhauled.
