Island Davaar lighthouse from layby on B842 near Baraskomill
Category B Listed lighthouse. Davaar island was previously known in the 15th century as Sanct Barre. The cost of construction was estimated at around 4,000 and John Barr & Co. built the 20m lighthouse in 1854. James Milne & Son made the lantern and the leadwork was made by John Marshall. David and Thomas Stevenson were the engineers. The light used a mercury vapour lamp in conjunction with catoptric mirrors driven by clockwork machinery. It now flashes white twice every 10 seconds. 37m above sea level, it has a range of 15 nautical miles. The light was automated in 1983. As with many others, the Lighthouse Keepers Cottages have been converted into holiday lets. At low tide, Davaar is connected to the mainland by the Dhorlin, a shingle bank that is a 30 minute walk from lighthouse to mainland.
