Stoer Head Lighthouse, Raffin
Stoer Head Lighthouse, Raffin
Category B Listed lighthouse, 1870 by David and Thomas Stevenson. Relatively short at 46ft (14m) it is 177ft (54m) above sea level. The light flashes white every 15 seconds and has a range of about 21 miles. Oil-fuelled for much of its life, it was later converted to electric. The light became automated in 1978. A jetty was built about a mile south of the lighthouse to land materials for the build and no doubt continued to be used for supplies for many years until access roads became useable. The keepers' accommodation is today rented out as two holiday apartments. In 2013 a 13,000 public composting toilet was built in the car park to accommodate the approximately 10,000 visitors each year. The need for this was identified by Leigh Sedgley of the Living the Dream tea van who raised 1,000 by public appeal to start the process of planning and obtaining further funding.
