Sometime between 1715 and 1734, alterations to the Elizabethan ramparts included the creation of the Nine Gun Battery (though there were only eight on the day of my visit) overlooking Carrick Roads and armed with nine muzzle loading guns. The guns displayed today, of early 19th century date with replica carriages, stand on original stone platforms behind original embrasures.
