NG6423 : Broadford Co-op refurbishment
taken 6 years ago, near to Broadford/An t-th Leathann, Isle of Skye, Scotland

Broadford village stands on the A87, which is the only access road for all visitors to the Isle of Skye (travelling by road) who wish to see the northern two thirds of the island.
The Broadford supermarket is the only large grocery shop for some distance, and its petrol station is the only 24-hour fuel facility on Skye. It is a busy place!
The shop was probably built in the mid-1970s at the same time as a petrol station opened alongside (then named Sutherlands Garage). For a while, the garage also operated a gift shop in about half of the shop building, and was known as 'Skye Surprises'. The Co-op grocery store occupied the other half of the building.
In about 2009, the premises were significantly refurbished, with Skye Surprises disappearing, and the Co-op being expanded to occupy the entire shop.
In winter 2018/19 a further major refurbishment is taking place. The old petrol station has been completely demolished, and a new larger forecourt is being created, with additional pumps and larger queuing space.
The shop is to remain open throughout the refurbishment, but with a temporarily reduced trading area. A temporary diesel-only fuel pump is being installed in the car park.
When it re-opens, the new shop will retain approximately the same floor area as before, but will have been reconfigured and updated.
A new entrance porch is being erected which will modernise the appearance of the front of the original building.
