Weymouth, The Rangers' War Memorial
Weymouth played a major role in the invasion of France during World War Two. This memorial, erected on the Esplanade, was unveiled on 3rd December 1947 in memory of the more than a half a million American servicemen, including the 1st Infantry Division and Ranger units, who passed through Weymouth and Portland to the beaches of Normandy between 6th June 1944 and the end of the war on 7th May 1945.
The monument is constructed from Portland stone and is in the form of an octagonal pedestal supporting the base which carries a pillar surmounted by a lamp with leaded lights. The base has a bronze plaque on east face. Later stone tablets have been added to the other faces.
The monument is sometimes referred to as "Weymouth American Memorial" Link
