Pelican crossing, Bettws Lane, Newport
Chambers Dictionary states that the term pelican crossing is adapted from "pedestrian light controlled crossing". Originally, Bettws Lane was indeed a lane, leading into a rural area to the west of Malpas Road. Since the building of many hundreds of houses in the Bettws estate from the 1960s, Bettws Lane is now a busy road, because it is the main road into and out of the estate. The only other access roads are country lanes, unsuitable for heavy traffic.
