D-Day embarkation 'hard' - Torquay
D-Day embarkation 'hard' - Torquay
One of two concrete aprons on Beacon Quay and used for loading landing craft for the D-Day invasion of Normandy. These are unusually steep due to tidal conditions and also unusual in being supported by concrete pillars rather than cast on sloping ground. These have a memorial nearby that drew my attention to them - otherwise I would have completely missed their significance in military history.
