NO1132 : Gatehouse and mills, Stanley Mills
taken 13 years ago, near to Stanley, Perth And Kinross, Scotland

Originally built as water-powered cotton mills in the late 18th century, these mills have been preserved and parts renovated and converted into apartments. The location on a peninsula on the River Tay lent itself to exploitation of the large volumes of water that could be diverted through a tunnel to work waterwheels before discharging back to the river downstream. Later in the 19th century the waterwheels were replaced by turbines, and today there is still a small power station with a modern turbine, operated commercially and selling electricity to the grid. The mills are now an Historic Scotland property and are open as a tourist attraction with some interesting exhibits and hands-on displays.
