Far End, Sheepscombe: Woody's Cottage
This cottage was the home of John Workman OBE (d.2008), "Woody" to his friends, who owned the Ebworth Estate. The son of a timber merchant, John Workman initially read electronics at Cambridge but switched his studies to forestry at Oxford and became an authority on woodland management. From the 1950s he was forestry advisor to the National Trust and in 1989 he transferred ownership of the woods around this cottage (inherited by him and his sisters from their father in 1962) to the National Trust, staying on as manager. The wood is now named "Workman's Wood" in his honour; the cottage is now available to rent as a holiday cottage.
