The chip shop at Sennen will serve its last fish supper on Friday when it will close after 30 years of trading. For three decades owner Jennifer Barker has worked at the village business but decided to hang up her apron at the end of this summer.

She said this week: "It's a long hard season when we do 15 to 18 hour days and I just felt that it was time to do something else. I do feel sorry for all the locals and the holidaymakers who have come here since my dad had it, and I shall be sad to close, but it's time to strike out and do something new."

The business had been on the market for the last two years, but without a buyer Mrs Barker decided to demolish the restaurant to make way for a house for her daughter. Holiday homes are set to be built on the former car park.

The chip shop has been in the family as long as Mrs Barker can remember, and previously had traded as a cafe and a carpenter's workshop, which gives the chippy its Cornish name, Ser-Pren.

Among those who will also bow out with Mrs Barker is Hilary Williams, who has worked at the family business for 40 years.

Mrs Barker said: "We have always tried to employ local people and it has always been like one big family here."

She added of the restaurant's imminent closure: "We will have one last supper on Friday when we will invite family and friends and then after that we will just quietly disappear."
