Sally Evans, Brading:

I contacted the Isle of Wight Council by phone about three weeks ago concerning three tents on Yaverland beach, camping while night fishing.

I had explained to the campers, who were here on holiday, that they are not allowed to camp on the beaches on the Island.

One said he didn't care and asked what it had to do with me, and there weren't any signs to say they couldn't camp there. Fair comment.

I received a voicemail  from the council saying someone had gone to speak with them, but they are moving on in a few days.

Yes they did leave the tent for three days, to return for another nine days.

When they did leave, they left the tents, broken chairs and of course rubbish.

On August 11, I noticed three tents and five people.

I decided not to contact the council, but the County Press, as I think the approach from the council wasn't the correct one.

After speaking about the tents with local people using Yaverland beach, they felt that no-one would do anything, so there was no point reporting it.

They, as do I, feel this could start people camping wherever they want and our beaches becoming camping sites — leaving rubbish, tents and other items for the council to clean up, wasting taxpayers money.

A notice by the entrance may prevent this from continuing, but I feel the council shouldn't accept any excuses as to why they are camping there and move them on.
