Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet.

Darrow - and Reds like him - are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies...even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

I felt bogged down at the start and almost gave up. I'm glad I didn't. It becomes a thoroughly engaging story, well narrated. I also started with a bit of bias because I'd read the Reddit audible mafia pouncing on a reader who asked if Red Rising has a cliffhanger ending. To me they were saying it does and hate anyone who thinks that's a problem. It ain't true. No cliffhanger. It is a complete story.

Certainly the world is open and there is clearly more story to be had, but the listener is not left unsatisfied with gaping unresolved issues in the current epic.

So I heartily recommend this listen and just urge that if, like me, you prefer a solid action pace, do not make the mistake of quitting too soon. The initial groundwork is indeed necessary to the character and motivation later. Enjoy!

very good story once it gets going

very similar to "The Hunger Games" and "The Roar". a lot of the plot points are similar to the point of predictability, but it seems to me a good book nonetheless.

an interesting take on the sci-fi caste society

Powerful story from beginning to end. The anger, pain, triumph was felt in every word. I’m usually into hard sci-fi, most sci-fi out there (to me) is just stories set in space… but not this. This takes story to a greater height. This is Hunger games, survivor, lord of the flies, breaveheart all wrapped into one.

Don’t know why I waited so long
