(Personal Updates post probably forthcoming – spoiler alert: I'm doing fine – but as I am busy with Important Life Things, more links! CWs for alcohol, mentions of religion, death.)

Annoying Dreamwidth feature: comment IP address tracking is on by default, and I'm... somewhat uncomfortable with having my IP posted publicly. This isn't necessarily as much of an issue for people in e.g. the Bay Area, but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only rationalist-adjacent in this region. Far less anonymity than I'd like.

Turned off IP logging for my journal (account settings -> privacy -> IP address logging); would encourage others to do the same, modulo compelling reasons to have it on.

DRC Health Ministry on Ebola as of 7 December; also see archives.

New cases still don't appear to be slowing down, w/ a cumulative total of 489 cases (441 confirmed) and 280 deaths. Case-fatality rate isn't horrible compared to past outbreaks, but the continued increase in cases is concerning; this is the worst outbreak that DRC's ever had, and continentwide the only outbreak with more cases is the 2014 West African epidemic. There are concerns about spread to Uganda. DRC has had sporadic Ebola outbreaks for decades and is generally better able to deal with the virus than other countries, but there's currently a confluence of political/social factors (esp. ongoing Kivu conflict) that make control unusually difficult.

also, wow, DRC's immunized a lot more people against Ebola than I'd've thought – as of yesterday, 42,673 since August 2018 (!)

(always liked the thought of this post format; inordinately gleeful about being able to dump an assortment of links into the internet-void; generally treating it as "here's a sampling of information that has interacted w/ my brain recently")

[personal profile] staranise: Basic Dreamwidth for Tumblr users

Amanda Askell: "Vegetarianism, Abortion, and Moral Empathy" (linked from 80k Hours podcast episode)

Raemon: "Strategies of Personal Growth"

From Daniel Kahn, 2016: Yiddish translation of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"

Miller, 1994: "Science, Ethics, and Moral Status" – discussion of issues raised by continuity of moral patienthood; rather basic, but at least useful to me

The Atlantic (2016): "In the Land of Missing Persons" – longform journalism, missing persons in Alaska

just came across this strongly critical analysis of Barley and Daniel (1973) ("From Jerusalem to Jericho": a Study of Situational and Dispositional Variables in Helping).

now I'm a little bit annoyed at people who hold that study up as an really great investigation of ethical decision-making! and also at myself, because this is a fascinating paper, a very satisfying psych study that confirms a few things I'd prefer to believe, and why did I assume the study design was good, has anyone checked whether it replicates
