[...] Europe must become a global political player,” said Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz in his speech at the Munich Security Conference (MSC). At the MSC, Deutsche Welle once again demonstrated its international relevance and multilingual expertise as a media partner. We conducted 57 interviews, reported in 14 languages, and delivered the most important debates, analyses and interviews directly from Munich to our users. In times of major geopolitical uncertainty, people around the world turn to us as a reliable international media brand from Germany and Europe. This is reflected in our 2025 digital annual review, with more than 18 billion views over the past year. Fast, precise, collaborative: DW at MSC 2026 Our teams on site and in the back office demonstrated impressive editorial collaboration, leveraged the unique dynamism of the MSC, and produced high-quality content for our global audience. Michaela Küfner, for example, interviewed California Governor Gavin Newsom immediately after his bilateral meeting with the Federal Chancellor. The fact that, alongside Newsom, Senators Chris Coons and Lisa Murkowski – three members of the US delegation – agreed to interviews with us as a German media outlet underscores our relevance in the American market. Key speeches, such as those by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, were analyzed by our DW correspondents in various live broadcasts. Defense Minister Pistorius and Foreign Minister Wadephul speak to DW Ahead of the conference, a DW team accompanied Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on a short-notice visit to a Bavarian drone factory, part of a German-Ukrainian cooperation project. Interview with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Radoslav Sikorski Nina Haase spoke with Radoslav Sikorski on Saturday, capturing his reaction to Marco Rubio’s speech: The US and Europe perceive threats differently. I also had the opportunity to exchange views with the Polish Deputy PM. Compelling productions, broadcasts and live tickers Alongside a wide range of high-quality interviews, our productions and live broadcasts in the program languages were particularly impressive: From a recording of the political news magazine “Massayia-Talk” in Arabic, to a new edition of the security policy vodcast “Geofaktor” in Russian, to an extended live coverage in Ukrainian and Russian. DW’s Conflict Zone live in Munich “Confronting the Powerful” is the tagline of DW’s interview format Conflict Zone, a standard reflected in Sarah Kelly’s moderation of the town hall titled “Life Under Destruction: Building Blocks for a New Gaza.” Participants included Nickolay Mladenov, High Representative for Gaza; the foreign ministers of the Palestinian Authority and Spain; senior politicians from the United States and the United Arab Emirates; and former Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. The panel sparked debate not only among the audience in the hall but also across the region, as reflected in international media coverage. Development policy under scrutiny: Edith Kimani moderates opening town hall Even before the official start of the conference, Edith Kimani led the debate “Reboot or Repair? Toward a New Development Paradigm.” German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Reem Alabali Radovan emphasized: “We need strategic partnerships with countries of the Global South. Development cooperation is also part of geopolitics.” ‘Now live’: DW program highlights at the MSC ‘DW Berlin Briefing’ – this time from Munich What do the speeches by Friedrich Merz and Marco Rubio at the MSC mean for German-US relations? Michaela Küfner and Nina Haase analyzed the implications live from the MSC YouTube Studio together with Jens Spahn, leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, and Ian Bremmer, president of the Eurasia Group, in a special edition of the vodcast. “DW Berlin Briefing” looks at German (geo)politics from the capital – this time from Munich. MSC Cinema: Screening of DW format ‘Mapped Out’ Greenland’s growing geopolitical importance, Donald Trump’s interest in the island, and Europe’s response were the focus at MSC Cinema on Friday evening. Our geopolitical format “Mapped Out” was shown on the big screen. ICYMI: The episode is also available to stream on demand. Screening of poignant documentary ‘Second Wind’ The documentary follows five Ukrainian soldiers on an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. After the screening, Nathanael Liminski (North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister for Federal, European and International Affairs and the Media), boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko, security expert Nico Lange and director Mascha Kondakova discussed how the West can continue to support Ukraine. The panel was moderated by DW’s Head of Eastern Europe, Alexandra von Nahmen. DW in Davos: “Can Europe Defend Itself?” Before security policy took center stage in Munich, the World Economic Forum in Davos focused on key economic policy questions. Sarah Kelly moderated the high-profile panel featuring NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish President Karol Nawrocki and other guests.
