I love this commercial by German DIY megastore Hornbach. That dad rocks! Also, I'm getting childhood memories, here - returning from school horror to the safety of the funeral home, heh!

Music for the weekend - en français!
Mar. 15th, 2014 10:12 pmProbably known to some of my European friends, but I don't think these artists have made it across the pond - yet!
La Caravane Passe - "T'as la Touche Manouche"
No point describing this combo from France - watch this! Impossible to sit still to this...
Stromae - "Quand c'est?"
Stromae is an extremely versatile Belgian artist. He covers many genres, and had his big break-through with the dance-number "Alors on danse". "Quand c'est?" is completely different, slow and melancholic.

Ahahaha! I FOUND MY OLD LOTR VIDEOS!!!
Dec. 9th, 2013 01:09 amDear Gods! I had no idea my stuff's still up on youtube!
This, dear children, is what ol' Molly did many, many years ago. Dear me, I've spent WEEKS on these two videos, which were made in the good old stop-motion technique (hahaha!) in - wait for it - CorelDraw!
LORDS OF THE DANCE
(For whatever reasons, embedding is disabled, but you MUST see the Fellowship kicking their heels to "Cotton Eye Joe"!!!)
And this one... *dies*

Belated 722th Birthday, Switzerland!
Aug. 4th, 2013 09:51 pmOk, strictly speaking, it was your 198th birthday on 1st August. Well, 165th, but let's not be nitpicky here; oldest democracy in Europe blablabla whatever. Anyway, after entertaining you with battle cows last year, I have something special for you today, and it fits that I post it late, because it's the old Swiss national anthem, the one used before 1984 and still stubbornly used by older people like me who never accepted the new (written in 1841) one.
So why did Switzerland change its old anthem in the first place, you ask?
WE WERE BULLIED INTO CHANGING IT! BULLIED, I TELL YOU!
And who was the mean old bully? Well, have a wild guess!
Bitter, me? Naw... just remember next time who had it first. Your anthem is recycled, nyah nyah nyah! :P***
***It's not, of course. But it's a great story to confuse expats!

Ahahahaha! PRICELESS!
Dec. 15th, 2012 10:17 pmYou know who'll represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö next May?

Clever move! It will need a direct intervention from God for Switzerland to win that contest, ever!
This is so bizarre; I LOVE IT! (Voted ten times for them, just for the heck of it!)

Yes, yes, none of my business as I'm not American yadda yadda, but if you're the self-declared leading nation of the world, you'll have to live with the fact that us non-leading nations of the world will get sort of worried if there's a risk you guys could hand power to a group of people who think an ASBO is a badge of honour.
Congratulations to the old/new President, and I hope politicians from all parties will now finally focus on the people rather than on the question if Jesus had a pet-Velociraptor or not.

Molly's Random Jukebox: Day 7
Sep. 18th, 2012 11:31 pmThe last day of Molly's Random Jukebox!
aglarien1 No. 59: "L'Arpeggiata, Christina Pluhar, Lucilla Galeazzi & Marco Beasley - Tarantella del Gargano"
Go for folk songs if you want to know what kind of music "ordinary" people enjoyed centuries ago. This is a wonderful example of a traditional Italian song from the 17th century; it hasn't lost any of its power through the centuries; one of those things which connect us to the past.
caecus_parvulus No. 110: "Placebo - Running up that Hill"
I really like Kate Bush's original, but this - woooh... very intense. I once had a really terrifying nightmare (about the aftermath of a war on a battlefield; very grim stuff), and that song was playing in the background ("Dreams don't come with sound!" Oh yes, they do. Sometimes.)
chaotic_binky No. 7: "Rammstein - Engel"
I'll never forget that conversation: "Isn't it a bit risky to book them... I don't think they can fill a venue of 1200 people..." Ahaha! The other highlight was "I don't think anybody want to see Robbie Williams without Take That". Rammstein will always be my favourites. 100% professional and reliable, a pleasure to work with. I don't know what they are like today, but back then, they were really great blokes. And this despite some truly catastrophic concerts (not that they noticed, I hope) - the highlight being some janitor locking the door to the venue and refusing to let staff and crew in because he thought Rammstein were devil worshippers or something. Haha! Good times, good times...
That's it! Hope you had fun, now it's back to regular service and exciting entries about the mating rites of dung beetles.

Molly's Random Jukebox: Day 6
Sep. 17th, 2012 09:52 pmTry listening to this and NOT get moving! I don't know how well known the band around Irish lead singer Rea Garvey is outside of Germany, but they have yet to deliver a song that I don't like. Look them up on youtube!
Everything about this is genius. The music! The nonsense lyrics! The absolutely brilliant fantastic amazing Max Fleischer-like music video! I want to hug and kiss this video and call it George.
Terrific duo, but a pain to work with (why yes, I know how to hold a grudge...) - this is a great song, though, and I love the lyrics.
Molly's Random Jukebox: Day 5
Sep. 16th, 2012 08:18 pmOne day delayed, sorry about that.
Rebecca Matthies No. 72: "Wynonie Harris - Good Morning, Judge"
If you say "R'n'B",I'm thinking of Wynonie Harries, Lucky Millinder, Louis Jordan and Big Joe Turner. Wish somebody would do a cover of "Good Morning, Judge" or "Bloodshot Eyes"; not because I feel it's necessary, but I'd be curious to see the reactions to his lyrics.
alex_beecroft No. 23: "Sisters of Mercy and Ofra Haza - Temple of Love"
Oh those wonderful goldenblack days of my youth, when no goth DJ would leave the turntables without having played that song, and we'd all storm the dance floor to the tune of "Temple of Love", black hair (no. 1) and heads shaking and bodies moving in the most arhythmic ways possible! Good times, good times...
naurring No. 16: "Le soldat inconnu - Warte auf mich"
Another band I've worked with during my time at the concert agency; they came from the French part of Switzerland and are not around anymore. This is one of their few songs in German, not in French, and the female singers unique voice gives it a very haunting quality. To my surprise their CD is still available on Amazon; highly recommended.

Molly's Random Jukebox: Day 4
Sep. 13th, 2012 11:08 pmEven I manage to get out of bed in time if this song os playing in the morning. It's woohoo from beginning to end. :-)
I don't think it's intended that way, but to me this video looks very much like one of those dreaded "I'm being chased by some scary person and just can't get away" nightmares of my childhood. Creepy... still a good song, though.
Nothing much to say here but "genius song by genius singer".
Molly's Random Jukebox: Day 3
Sep. 12th, 2012 10:59 pmGerman electronicdarkwavenotreallygothbutthenagainmaybetheyare Deine Lakaien manage the miracle of getting you in a melancholic mood without making you feel depressed. If you close your eyes while listening to them on a rainy Sunday evening, you'll find your mind travelling to strange, dark yet fascinating places. And the voice of Alexander Veljanov is just... wow.
Ah, the much maligned Lana Del Rey. I can't help but scratch my head over people who complain that she's a "manufactured personality marketed to a specific segment of the audience" - OF COURSE SHE IS! Most artists are merchandise; manufactured and marketed. It's called music business for a reason. I don't think I'm part of the specific audience segment in question, but I still enjoy her music. So nyah!
WHY YES, I'D SURE LOVE TO KNOW!
Molly's Random Jukebox: Day 2
Sep. 11th, 2012 07:13 pmNow here's a story to tell: we had booked a venue for Runrig which was perfect, but the guy responsible for it was absolutely chaotic. With - everything. We all loved him dearly, and the place was great, but that specific Runrig seemed to end before it all began: all the lights went out, every powerline was dead two hours before the gig. Why? Dear N. had forgotten to pay the electricity bill. How can you forget to pay the electricity bill for a concert venue? I don't know, but he managed. And while our technical manager hopped on his bike and tried to find some person in charge at the electrictiy provider, we had to break the news to the band that there wouldn't be a concert because no electricity. Runrig? Just shrugged and said: no problem, then we'll play unplugged.
And they did! Without a fuzz and by the light of candles and electric torches! After a couple of songs, the electricity was switched on again (courtesy couple of free tickets for "Swanlake", I suppose), but nothing could have been as magic as those first few songs. Bless that band, I'll love them forever.
So many would like to be cool dawgs, but he really is. Sean Paul, keeping Molly joyful, dancing and singing along since 1745!
The world's such a poorer place without you, Pete. We still miss you like crazy, big man... this is one of my favourite TON songs; like so much of Pete's work, it touches a nerve, and it hurts, but in a good way: sometimes pain will remind you that you're still alive.
