The Tolkien Estate frowns on fanfiction. Because: reasons, mostly integrity of Tolkien's work.

Integrity is, by definition, "the practice of being honest and showing a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles and values" (thank you, wikipedia).

I don't know whose moral and ethical principles and values were consistently and uncompromisingly adhered to when Amazon Prime got the rights to produce this series. Tolkien's? Jeff Bezos'? Rumpelstilzkin's?

Ironically, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is fanfiction. Mediocre fanfiction of the Mary Sue variety. It was written for financial gain, though, and not by fans. I can only hope they will eventually find a capable beta-reader. As it is now, I would not leave a kudo - LOTR:ROP has no heart, no spark, and absolutely no soul.

But it has Harfoots. That doesn't help.

The production looks great, I'll give them that. The Orcs are fantastic and the scenes with Disa and Durin jr. were amusing. But that's not enough to keep me hooked and paying. So I'll pass on this, thank you. My life will be much happier without Julius Gil-galad and Finrod the Hallmark Elf. I will not take any risks. They might cast Nathan Fillion as Glorfindel.

Ugh, that's disappointing to hear.

I thought the scenery was pretty. Very disappointed in the Elven characters. The plot seemed weird, disjointed.
I loved Lenny Henry as Sadoc Burrows, though. “There’s something not right with the sky!”

I think there are a lot of discrepancies with canon. Timings, mostly.
I have a vague idea Eregion was his city, and that was by Moria. But he built that later perhaps, so maybe he was camping. :D
Still he was an elf - so a very long wander around the countryside would be a pleasure. Certainly better than in a cave smashing rocks.

I just watched episode 3. Oh my, the elves have an awful time in this one, but I can hardly think of them as elves. Just men with pointy ears.
Maybe because PJ and Alan Lee shared the vision I had of elves when I read the books.
Perhaps someone coming to it new will feel differently.
I'll keep watching. The story of Elendil and Isildur is more interesting and the scenery of Númenor beautiful. So worth a look perhaps

Yes, Arondir the only elf character who has the looks.

I do not yet know if I will give it a try, because I went through the cast list and thought ´oh, and I thought that Peter Jackson found the ugliest elves around, but no, it can get even worse!´

The actor who plays Celebrimbor (forgot his name) also plays in Downton Abbey. and I found him rather charismatic. But then, his character fit his appearance better. Still not convinced for him as Celebrimbor.

It's like RoP has a kink for square jaws. Not that it's a bad thing (it's not like humans have an agency over their genes), but it's like everyone has the same face.

And RIP ugly PJ's Elves (made me laugh)

Elrondian facepalm

As in when Elrond facepalmed in The Fellowship of the Ring because he was done with Gandalf (Gandulf, pls). (Is the figurine in the picture Elrond with his armour from the Hobbit movies or Gil-galad in PJ's LotR?)

My bud watched it, he's a casual LotR fan, he said RoP isn't life changing, but to pass time, it does its job. Most people I know aren't convinced by this series. I won't watch it because I loathe giving Amazon money, I'm only here to collect reviews (and rants).

(Rip your reply function. Mine works just fine. Ah, #technology)

I'd love to see a twin facepalm, I'm sure it's priceless.

I approve the month trial. It's rather smart. I should have thought about it!
If it were on ao3, I might read it. It's hard to tell, I can be quite picky with what I consume (published fiction or fanfiction, I don't consider published fiction inherently better than fanfic. Ah, if you knew all the crap I read at university). From the little I know, I'd say it's something I'd write--dubious AU and all. It'd be better if RoP were a crack fic imo. Too much seriousness doesn't always successfully convey what it tries to. It's rather the opposite. At least, purposely bad writing can get away with being bad and trollish.

I will be watching the whole thing - I don't love it and it is not replacing my view of Tolkien but it is interesting to see it.
