This is a short scene taking place on a plane to Paris from NY in 1969. Roger Sterling thinks he recognizes an old friend.

Go Ask Roger

Mad Men/Highlander; PG-13, LSD taking; Roger Sterling, Don Draper, Fitz Fitzhugh. about 2100 words.

Latest addition to my OFMD series, The Pirate and the Barber

Reunion
-- M/M, Ed/Stede, M rating
It's a flashback to Stede and Ed's reunion in this canon-era, canon-divergent series. I started it after Season 1 and never adapted it to Season 2, if that floats your dinghy.
The crew maroons the two of them on a beach with a lighthouse and its keeper's hut, alone, for 7 days, to kill each other or patch it up.
There are a lot of references to Portman, the barber/pirate from the series, but it can be read independently. Just shrug when you see his name and carry on reading about Ed divesting Stede of his saltwater and sand soaked britches.

It's smut adjacent, meaning nothing is described in excruciating detail, but there's a lot of wandering around naked and a one-bed situation. Also a turtle and lizards.

Oh, yay! I offered Ned the jungle cat, from Our Flag Means Death.
I was assigned Ned walks into a bar and meets Mazikeen, demon from Lucifer.

This may pair well with my one published OFMD/Lucifer crossover, Izzy in Hell. Izzy walks into a bar...

I love into a bar stories. This challenge is always fun -- sign-ups open through May 19, midnight, PST.

A Ficathon Goes Into a Bar: sign ups

I'm stretching a little bit, trying to write every day. I think I can do 500 words, though the character I'm given always throws me.
This year I'm offering Ned the jungle cat from Our Flag Means Death going into a bar; the fandoms for a character he'll meet are Highlander; Lucifer; Good Omens; The Great Mouse Detective; What We Do in the Shadows; and Discworld.

In my Barber and the Pirate series, Ned is very popular among the four or five readers I have now. Ridiculous, but oh, well.

The Unhinged Historians group (for Our Flag Means Death) on Discord had a remix exchange last year. JaneSane has made a zine with art and excerpts from fic for all resulting creations. There were no limits on the kind of work created, so there are stories, images, games, music, vids, and (for me!) handmade wash balls from 18th century recipes, with the attendant research. It's very nice to look through, and there are 300-400 word snippets of fic to tempt you to click through to the original and remixed stories. It's well worth a browse.

Some things are improving a bit, through the grace of several old friends and my sister. I'm accomplishing tiny things each day and sleeping too much. Today my Max subscription expires--I unsubscribed from almost everything. I binge watched The Sopranos before the end. I was surprised at how funny much of the dialogue is.

I'm allowing myself a small treat for my 75th birthday, if I can just figure out what to order. A quart of borscht from Veselka is high on the list. For my 70th, I bought myself some gold earrings from Italy.

Or I could get the tattoo I've been promising myself for when the estate is settled. I don't know if I want to wait that long, now. I don't want to wait for much. I dithered over pretty designs, but I think I want the Unovis symbol like this: https://images.app.goo.gl/6GUjvbPK5cpXYZbC8
Haven't decided whether to keep the Cyrillic script or make it Roman.

I haven't posted much for the past few months, dealing with the aftermath of Mom's death and the problems around clearing out her/our house and all the legal issues of probate and our dissident brother in settling the estate and selling the house.

Our legal problems settling the estate may go on for close to a year. Before our brother's refusal to cooperate with the rest of us (my sister, my other brother, and myself), we thought all of this would be resolved and the estate settled (and our expenses reimbursed) by May.
Maintaining the house mortgage, monthly bills, and repairs and legal bills have been a drain on all our resources. I've depleted my savings, which might be reimbursed when we finally settle affairs. At the moment, I'm broke and in debt. I'm living on my SSA check, which just covered my bills, with me living in my condo, before my monthly HOA fees were raised.

Due to losing my Homestead status for my condo, my property taxes quadrupled to over $2000. I'm facing several thousand dollars of additional expenses, including taxes and medical expenses and transportation, for April -- my condo HOA fees have been raised from $422 to $850 a month for April through August.

This is an explanation for why I'm going to try to set up a Go Fund Me account to meet my bills. I have two full-time jobs on my desk now, which will not result in a paycheck until four weeks after their completion (meaning mid-May to mid-July). I am trying to sell Mom's sewing machines and a few other things, including two bicycles. I've delayed setting this in motion through embarrassment, but my situation is only getting worse.

I'll post a link when I finally get this thing up.

I experimented with taking an old story and repurposing it for a different fandom -- plagiarizing my own work, I suppose.

It worked pretty well for the character, I thought, and my re-setting it in her world. I thought it would appeal, since the character is popular and she doesn't seem to have a lot of backstory (this is funny, and I swear to God, it's not badly written), but it fell through the cracks again. 16 hits, 3 kudos (almost obligatory, from friends).

Maybe they didn't think the erotica was erotic? I'm rather tone deaf to some things, and looking at what I thought was a funny scene (because the original heroine of this piece was a strong fighter, just caught off guard) might read badly as assault? It doesn't explain why so few readers even looked at it, but it might explain why those who did, didn't like it.

Anyway, It was practice, and something different from the series I've been grinding away on.

I liked the one I wrote about the talking fish.

I don't think any Our Flag Means Death fans are reading here, but for the record, I've added another chapter to my fic Roving On (Mature, M/M; Izzy Hands/OC Portman, Evelyn Higgins, Ned the jungle cat, Frenchie, Blackbeard-Ed, Stede Bonnet).
Canon-era AU, ignores Season 2

This is the latest part of my series The Pirate and the Barber. The first two parts are 1) backstory for Stede on Barbados, through his friendship with his barber (Portman), an ex-pirate, until he runs off the first time;  2) picks up from there and carries on in Barbados -- a large part of it is AU with Blackbeard/Ed/Jeff on Barbados. There is a running theme of Ed/Ned, scandalizing everyone. Before I found out that the cat used in the show was a leopard, I made Ned a jaguar, for Reasons.
The third part, Roving On, has Portman sailing with Izzy to meet up with Ed and Stede, and Evelyn and Ned shipwrecked on a familiar island.

It has a tiny but very fond readership. In Portman, you might see a kindred spirit to Hans.Portman (who also has gone under other names) has a peg leg. Most of this was written in the hiatus before S2.

However, The Wrench now has 5 kudos!
Poor Roger, at 52K words, has 7. I'm trying to work up the will to finish the epilogue/s.

We have to go to court (18 months estimated) to ask for a partition of Mom's estate by an independent authority because my brother will not cooperate with us on the house sale. Our new lawyer, the second we've hired, described him as a sociopath who would never agree to a compromise. Three of us vs. him, and all he has to do is sign a paper and sit back while we finish all the work we've done for this so far. Not including the seven years I acted as primary in-house caretaker for Mom and the house, since Dad died. Rotten brother didn't even attend her funeral, didn't come to visit her for the last four years of her life -- cry me a river, I could go on and on, but mainly, my share of the inheritance that should have come to me by May or even June, will now be delayed for god knows how long and will be greatly reduced by lawyer and court fees and paying HOA fees and the mortgage for the house. I'm dead broke and living on a very skimpy SSA check. At least, I own the condo I'm living in, but can't afford any repairs to the place.

Bah.

Posting fic these days is hardly worth the bother of formatting it, let alone writing. It's a soul-sapping exercise.

I'm carrying on, slowly, finishing up major WIPs I had from 15 or so years ago. This is

The Wrench (D/M), a PWP I started back in 2004 or earlier. I believe I wanted to make it sexy without any sex, with tension coming primarily from the setting and props.

It might be tools or hardware kink. Hard wooden chair kink? Duncan's just being a bastard, and, well, they're both being bastards, but since it's from Methos's POV, he'd the one you see turned on.

unovis: (Poor Roger manq)
I haven't been posting here much, but I have to remark on this: I've finished Poor Roger!

This is a Highlander story I began in 2007 and left as a WIP until this September. It's in the Clothing Stories series and takes place after Duncan leaves Methos in London.
It's an AU, where after the Horsemen, Methos retreats to England and begins a new life as an openly gay scholar specializing in Roman coins. For reasons. Amanda is featured, along with Methos's valet/personal assistant Hans, and the dog Foots. And, of course, there's Poor Roger, who fell in love with Methos and was astonished when Methos gathered him up. But it's not called Poor Roger for nothing.

There, I'm meandering.

My life has been overturned again these past months, since Mom died. Somehow, I began writing every day. Plain bread and butter writing, not so well or richly as I used to, but still and all, getting words on screen. I thought I'd try to finish up some outstanding work, Poor Roger being the longest. It's over 50k now!

I'm going to add some epilogues for main characters, so the ending won't seem so abrupt. But I'm going to take the win and act as if it's all done.

It seems there aren't any pirate show fans here, but just for the record-- I wrote a little thing between episodes. No smut, really. It's a fish story.

Fish Talk -- Edward Teach, OC; Ed's first day, wouldn't you know it.

The annual Highlander Holiday Shortcuts holiday exchange is opening again.
Sign-ups continue for the next two days (through October 22). Requirements are few and every year results in delightful surprises. It's a venerable fandom, but our characters endure. If you're interested, please stop by. More players means more fun.

I'm still working on Poor Roger updates. I had to finish two other things for OFMD first, and now a week of high-stress cleaning/moving is going to fall on my head. I haven't forgotten.

Didn't realize I still have that icon!

I'm finishing up my venerable WIP Poor Roger and posting it on AO3. It should come in a bit over 50k. Mature rating, Methos/OMC, reference to recent Duncan/Methos (from the already posted Clothing Stories). As with all the Clothing Stories, it's an AU that assumes Methos did not return to Paris after Bordeaux and the Horsemen.

Chapters 17 & 18 are new work from this summer and haven't been posted before. Three chapters to be posted, most of which, including the ending, have been written.

This is a story that was written in 2006-2007 and posted in my wildly erratic way.
After 6+ years away from everything, I started writing again in March and have kept it up every day. This is something new. While I'm at it, I decided to go back and tie up some old loose ends from Highlander, my favorite source, favorite characters, still.

The background for the story is posted on AO3. It has original characters whom the first readers liked.
At heart, it's Amanda meddling in an unhappy Methos's new relationship. There's also a plot about ancient coins, one in particular that Methos wants to get his hands on. And so!

Izzy in Hell? Our Flag Means Death/Lucifer, PG
Izzy has a favor to ask the Devil, if he can find him.
Short, mild, fanciful, no porn, not anti-Izzy. I think it's kind of cute.
Locked to AO3, trying to avoid AI scrapers.

Mom died this morning, peacefully, in her sleep. She was 98. She was an incredible, strong, talented woman. She introduced me to A.Conan Doyle, Robert Benchley, and 1001 Nights.
I've been living with her for the past 7 years, since Dad died.
I can escape Florida, now.

More Stede and his ex-pirate barber, plus a little self-check between Jack attacks.
