Seafarers' Day is an international day celebrated annually on 25 June to recognise the invaluable contribution of seafarers to international trade and the world economy. The Day of the Seafarer was established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010 and is recognised as a United Nations observance to honour the 1.5 million seafarers who keep global supply chains moving. The theme for the 2026 Day of the Seafarer is ‘Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks’ highlights their vital contributions to delivering essential goods like food and medicine, but also the heavy sacrifices and physical hazards they face while working. In July 2025 the Evergreen-operated vessel Ever Feat encountered a severe storm and heavy swells while sailing off the coast of southern Brazil. Recently, MTS’ Capt Harshvardhan Kumar presented to the Melbourne Marine Insurance Forum Inc. and the Victorian Claims Discussion Group on proximate cause. In the current Gulf conflict – where vessels face missile strikes, rerouting, and delay risks – the doctrine of proximate cause is decisive in determining whether a loss arises from war or from ordinary marine perils.
