  • What if the police productivity drive and the Crown Court backlog aren't two separate challenges at all? The Home Secretary set the goal of saving 6 million hours through improving police productivity. At the same time, the Ministry of Justice wants to bring down the court backlog – with the number of cases set to hit 100,000 in 2027. Alex Lowe, our Regional Director for UK&I, describes how these are both linked and can be improved together, in a new piece for Policing Insight. Alex lays out that we need to: 1️⃣ Scale the policing technologies already proven in individual forces – AI translation, automated report drafting, and digital evidence management – so that every officer has access to the most impactful tools. 2️⃣ Fix the fragmented procurement across England and Wales' 43 police forces by using the proposed National Police Service to enable centralised and standardised procurement that accelerates national adoption. 3️⃣ Align policing and court technology into a single ‘digital thread’ from the first 999 call to the final verdict, using integrated evidence platforms like Scotland's Digital Evidence Sharing Capability to move evidence seamlessly from scene to courtroom and cut the backlog. In Alex's words: "The tools exist, and the evidence is there. What we now need is a whole-system approach to bring these two reform agendas into one." The Government has set out clear ambitions to save police officers in England and Wales six million hours through technology, and invest in AI to cut the Crown Court backlog that’s predicted to hit 100,000 cases by November 2027; Alex Lowe of public safety technology experts Axon UK & Ireland argues that those aims are two ends of the same solution – a digital thread running from the first 999 call to the final verdict – which needs to be treated as a whole-system approach to justice technology. ❝The six million hours target and the court reform agenda are two ends of the same system – a digital thread that runs from the first 999 call to the final verdict. Treating them as one joined-up programme, rather than separate policies in separate Whitehall departments, will multiply the impact of both.❞ ❝In a city where over 28% of residents speak a language other than English, officers can now listen, respond, and engage with confidence in encounters that would previously have been difficult due to language barriers, and delayed while waiting for a translator.❞ ❝A unified approach not only eliminates the procurement bottleneck but also creates a feedback loop that puts frontline officers at the heart of innovation. In this system, input from an officer in Manchester can inform a tool that is then deployed effectively in Cornwall.❞ ❝The results from its pilot in Dundee are clear. Around 19,500 pieces of evidence were handled through DESC [Digital Evidence Sharing Capability], freeing up almost 550 hours of police officer time that could be returned to frontline duties.❞ ❝The case for a whole-system approach rests on outcomes: fewer victims waiting years for a verdict; more officers in the community rather than filling out forms; and a justice system that works efficiently and responsibly for everyone.❞ https://lnkd.in/e5-42bck

    • From custody suite to Crown Court: Why England and Wales need a whole-system approach to justice technology
  • Axon's UK & Ireland Regional Director, Alex Lowe, recently contributed to a piece in the Daily Express discussing the increase in shoplifting and what can be done to stop it.   A key issue is the lack of evidence – 70% of police probes into shoplifting collapse due to a lack of evidence. Body-worn cameras close this evidence gap, helping to reduce retail crime and protect staff.   Axon’s cameras capture high-quality footage, store it securely, and help build complete incident records, ensuring the police get more, better-quality evidence that the Crown Prosecution Service can then use to deliver swifter and more effective justice for victims.   Body-worn cameras help increase prosecution rates – and they deter crime from happening in the first place.   See the full article: https://lnkd.in/gPym85-Q

  • How can organisations build real resilience in a rapidly changing risk environment? At The Security Event, Axon’s Andy Massey and Daniel Frith will explore how connected safety ecosystems can help teams move from reactive response to proactive management. The session will cover how organisations can: • anticipate risk and adapt in real time • expand visibility into environments where traditional systems may not reach • turn information into learning through AI-driven insights • connect people, technology and intelligence at scale Using practical examples from public safety and enterprise environments, Andy and Daniel will share a clear framework for building safer, more adaptable organisations — with stronger trust, better awareness and continuous improvement at the centre. Join us on 28 April from 11-11.30 a.m. at NEC Birmingham for a strategic discussion focused on outcomes, not just technology. #TheSecurityEvent #EnterpriseSecurity
