  • Chemistry curriculum: what's next for England? #6 How should chemistry education help young people understand global challenges? Our research found that 81% of young people think climate change and sustainability should be taught in school or college. Students also told us that current coverage often feels “minimal”, “limited” or “not talked about enough”. Teachers recognise this too. Nearly half of those surveyed in our Green Shoots research wanted more sustainability and climate change content within chemistry education. Chemistry plays a vital role in addressing challenges related to climate change, energy, food production, health and water security. A modern chemistry curriculum can help learners understand both the problems and the solutions. With a chemistry curriculum consultation expected this September, there is an opportunity to help shape how these topics are reflected in the future curriculum.     📢 NEW RESEARCH PUBLISHED    Polymateria was founded with a mission to use scientific innovation to tackle plastic pollution.    Understanding that 80% of plastic found in our oceans originates on land, the company focused on creating a solution for the 32% of plastic packaging that leaks into the environment each year as unmanaged waste.    Designed to complement and support efforts to reduce plastic usage, reuse and recycle materials, Polymateria's Biotransformation technology was developed to enable polyolefin plastics – the most prevalent packaging materials – to fully biodegrade if they ended up in the open terrestrial environment. The intention being to stop plastic on land before it can reach the oceans.    The study released today by Polymateria, Imperial College London and SIRIM Berhad - Malaysia’s Governmental testing & certification body - marks a major milestone for the company and in the global fight against plastic pollution.    Published in a special Materials Degradation edition of Springer Nature's Nature Portfolio Journals, this groundbreaking collaborative paper contains the first ever peer-reviewed study showing full biodegradation of polyolefins (PE & PP) in the open terrestrial environment. The research confirms that no microplastics or toxic residues are left behind. The same polyolefins would otherwise persist in the environment for up to hundreds of years.     The research goes on to show that microbes which consume the plastic occur naturally in soil around the world and that no special conditions are needed for the biodegradation to take place. The plastic is consumed by microbes in the same way that they would digest natural oils or butter.     Now applied to a wide range of applications within and beyond packaging, Polymateria's technology is already deployed at scale especially in regions with higher levels of plastics leakage. We look forward to engaging with stakeholders across the board to discuss how the technology can further support efforts to tackle plastic pollution as deployment continues to grow.     A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the research.   • An insightful panel discussion at FICCI PubliCon 2026 Dr Venkatesh Sarvasiddhi, Ph.D., had a pleasure to moderate the FICCI’s panel on “The Future of Scholarly Communication and Knowledge Dissemination”, Dr. Rashmi Sharma , Head - NCSTC, SHRI & Scientist-F, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, Dr. Nabi Hasan, Head Librarian, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Mr. Debottam Bhattacharjee, National Sales Head, Cambridge University Press & Assessments. - Need for stronger policy frameworks that help translate research from the laboratory to its intended users, ensuring that research outcomes reach industry, policymakers and society and create meaningful impact. - Opportunity for stronger industry participation and investment in research funding, helping bridge the gap between academic research, innovation and real-world application. - Librarians have an increasingly important role to play beyond providing access. They can become active partners in enabling content discovery, research visibility and effective use of scholarly information. - Building trust in research requires a shared commitment across researchers, institutions, publishers, libraries and policymakers. The discussion reinforced an important point: the future of scholarly communication is not simply about making more research available, it is also about making knowledge more accessible, discoverable, trusted and impactful. From the changing landscape of libraries and publishers to the opportunities it creates.
