Support on Life's Journey

About us

RAILWAY MISSION is a Christian faith-based charity offering independent, confidential, impartial pastoral care to the railway community and members of the public affected by rail operations. Each of our regionally-based chaplains aims to be an impartial ‘friend’ for those who work on the railways. Regardless of faith, gender, sexual orientation, our chaplains offer face-to-face year around support, especially during an individual’s time of loneliness, stress, depression, bereavement or illness. Many are experiencing family breakdown, mental ill-health, bereavement, financial difficulties, being victims of crime and much more. Rail staff approach our chaplains for support through these difficult times as a friend and colleague, rather than phone a stranger to receive counselling support to talk through personal difficulties. But railway chaplains have also supported railway staff and police in the aftermath of major incidents, such as train crashes or terror attacks. Independent: Railway Mission is an independent non-denominational Christian charity, providing pastoral support to railway staff & members of the public affected by rail operations Confidential: Having a confidential listener is important for anyone who is struggling with the difficulties of life. Where there's a risk of harm to an individual or others, as far as possible we'll work with a person to find the best avenue for help. Impartial: Impartiality is essential to ensure that our support is given entirety without any outside influence, from either railway companies or from a persons manager or colleagues.

  • Chaplain Spotlight: Bernadette Cendrowska-Salt Bernadette is our Railway Mission chaplain for the North of Scotland. We have the very unique privilege of access all over the network and being able to see the diverse roles and challenges of the railway industry as a whole. "My advice to someone who is not sure about reaching out to us is that we are a totally independent and confidential service." • Industry endorsed mental health resilience training Our new railway resilience half-day training course is endorsed by CIRO | Chartered Institution of Railway Operators. It was developed specifically for the railway industry in direct response to concerns about an absence of relevant mental health training. You will learn practical tools to support your own mental health and that of your teams and will receive a formal certificate of completion. According to a recent report by the RSSB, stress amongst the railway workforce remains taboo. There is a culture of silence with many fearing repurcusions if they admit to mental health challenges. Managers can be reluctant to address the issue, exacerbated by a lack of resources to help respond to concerns.* The course is delivered by Andy Mitchell at Paideia Coaching, Railway Mission's professional training arm. Railway Mission has supported people working in the railway for 145 years and we understand the specific roles and pressures faced. Our training is railway industry specific, unlike other more general mental health training courses. The course covers: - How you can recognise the signs of burnout and stress in yourself and others. - Understanding workplace and home-related stressors and how they impact wellbeing. - Building confidence to have open, supportive conversations about mental health. - Equipping you with tools and strategies to look after you own wellbeing and to support colleagues. We are running open courses in Leeds and London this September and can also run tailored courses focusing on the specific needs of different job roles and teams. Please get in touch with Andy via https://lnkd.in/eNbBtcKF or email Andy.Mitchell@paideiacoaching.co.uk. *Managing work related stress in the rail sector, RSSB, 2026

  • Building connections with our heritage railway community Our support extends to everyone in the railway industry, including many former mainline railway workers who now work or volunteer on heritage lines. Frances Roscoe, our Railway Mission Chaplain for the Northeast, recently visited Claire Gibbons, General Manager of the Weardale Railway in Stanhope to learn more about the heritage line and the role it plays in local communities. The line was a working railway until 1993 but, when it stopped taking passengers and freight, the members and volunteers worked hard to protect and promote the line. Heritage services have operated along the line since 2004 and in 2020 The Auckland Project purchased the line and the Weardale Railway Ltd was born. As well as operating a very busy timetable and fun events including afternoon Teas, Santa Express and star gazing, the railway has become a magnet for an enormous number of community inspirations. Claire has a real heart for community and is passionate about helping local people to thrive. She has championed a number of important projects for the local area including a Litter train, Dementia train, community weekends and hands-on education and work experience for schools. Many of the people working on roles across the railway are retired from working on the mainline. Their roles include Guards, Inspectors, Drivers, Crossing Keepers, Station Maintenance and Heritage and Tour Guides. Frances explained: "The railway offers a fantastic range of roles for railway family members to take on once retired. They can use their existing skills, meet new people and contribute to a historic railway's future at the same time. As railway colleagues, my supporting role as a chaplain extends to them too."

Stepping up to support mental health Thank you to the CIRO | Chartered Institution of Railway Operators team for literally stepping up to the challenge and raising over £1,000 to support our work at Railway Mission. Thank you to everyone who completed the walking challenge and to all those who donated. Every penny makes a real difference to supporting the mental health of our railway family. The challenge also raised vital awareness of our work being there to offer a listening ear and hand of friendship when we are needed most.

CIRO Charity Walk raises over £1,000 for Railway Mission In June, seven CIRO colleagues took on a challenging 16-mile hike through the Peak District to raise funds for RAILWAY MISSION. Thanks to generous donations from across the rail industry, the team raised £1,004, which was formally presented at Rugby railway station to Liam Johnston MBE, Executive Director of Railway Mission, and Claire Keville the Business Manager. Liam Johnston plays a key role in leading Railway Mission’s ongoing work to provide necessary assistance to those working in rail, often at some of the most difficult moments in their lives. Victoria Johndrow, Learning and Development Manager and Wellbeing Champion at CIRO, said: “Railway Mission provides an invaluable source of support for people across our industry, often when they need it most. Their work aligns closely with CIRO's commitment to developing not only skilled rail professionals, but a healthy, resilient workforce.” Well done to everyone who took part! And a massive thank you to everyone who supported the challenge. #CIRO #RailwayMission #RailwayFamily #Wellbeing #RailIndustry #CharityFundraising
