On 10 August, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia near San José del Palmar in Chocó Department, causing widespread devastation across at least 395 municipalities in 14 departments. At least 270 people have been killed, over 3,800 injured, and more than 97,000 people affected. Thousands of homes, schools, health centres and roads have been damaged, leaving children and families in urgent need of support. Essential services and transport links have been disrupted, while ongoing aftershocks continue to affect communities across the region. Fundación PLAN has activated its emergency response plan, focused on Chocó and Valle del Cauca. Chocó is a department that has faced decades of underinvestment and armed conflict, and Plan International Colombia runs education and child protection programmes there to help children stay safe and in school. Last week, Reena Ghelani, CEO of Plan International, travelled to Baidoa, #Somalia, and met with families and communities facing a worsening humanitarian crisis. The combination of drought, conflict, economic pressures and shrinking humanitarian funding is pushing millions of people closer to the brink. Many families have already been forced to leave their homes. And with El Niño expected, there is a growing risk of extreme flooding, worsening food insecurity and further displacement. Around 2 million people are now facing emergency levels of food insecurity, more than double the number recorded last year. Behind these figures are families struggling to put food on the table and facing impossible choices about how to survive. Children, especially girls, are among those hardest hit. Every stitch tells a story 🪡 🪡 Meet Verónica , an Indigenous woman from Ecuador, who faced discrimination and barriers to higher education, but she never gave up. She became the first person in her family to graduate from university. Today she is a veterinary surgeon and researcher, who supports initiatives focused on sustainability, education, animal welfare and strengthening communities' resilience to climate change. She is also carrying forward her culture through traditional embroidery. “My family feels very proud,” Verónica says. “Now my younger cousins see that it is possible to go to university. Andrea, 17, and Sara, 14, began helping rebuild #Venezuela three days after the twin earthquakes struck on June 24. Determined to help their neighbours in La Guira, the sisters have delivered food and water and worked with teams trying to get medication to the people hit hardest by the earthquakes. During that time, they’ve seen the multilayered challenges that children, especially girls, face in a crisis, including accessing protection services, managing menstrual health with dignity and staying safe from exploitation and abuse. Since the first days of the emergency, Plan International and local partners have been supporting affected communities with child protection services, psychosocial support, safe spaces, dignity kits, education activities and primary health care.
