AI, rounders and a little healthy competition set the scene for Lexington's 2026 Summer Away Day! ☀️ We kicked things off by reflecting on the success of H1, followed by an all-company session exploring AI, the opportunities it presents and how we can embrace innovation across the business. Then it was time to swap laptops for bats for our much-loved, pizza-fuelled annual rounders match - featuring a few questionable batting techniques along the way... 🏏🍕 A great day to reconnect, share ideas and spend some time together under the sun! Extreme weather incidents often trigger the same reflex in the energy debate: pick a technology to blame, then pick another to fix it. Neither holds up under scrutiny. Carbon Brief's factcheck shows what happened to UK and European power generation this summer, technology by technology. 🔵 Three of France's 57 nuclear reactors shut down and output fell at seven more, cutting national nuclear generation by almost 9% – river water got too warm to cool them safely. 🔵 Gas plant capacity can drop by 13% at 40°C versus 20°C. 🔵 Wind output fell by 30–50% on average across Europe, Australia and northern Asia under heat-dome conditions. 🔵 Solar lost some efficiency but still outperformed on output thanks to clear skies. 🔵 Even storage isn't immune – Australia's battery and pumped-hydro fleet faced real strain during this year's heatwaves too. No technology got through unscathed, but that doesn’t mean any of them are dispensable either. Nuclear, gas, wind, solar, storage – each cover a gap the others leave on a given day. We don’t live in a world of ‘silver bullet’ technologies. Betting on a diverse mix may feel like a hedge, but in an unpredictable global system a mixed national portfolio is a safer than betting the system on a favourite. But this needs two caveats: 1️⃣ It can’t be diverse by chance – it must be by design. This means that we need to put a fresh critical eye on whether UK long term energy strategy and political ideology match up. 2️⃣ We still need to stop casually talking about “energy” when we’re actually talking about “electricity”. In 2024, 80% of UK homes still heated with gas, and transport stayed 92% petroleum-fuelled. In the same way that the power transition depends on more than one tech, heating won't be solved by one option either. Even government's Warm Homes Plan, published in January, pairs heat pumps with heat networks and is still working through what role biomethane and hydrogen play for the homes hardest to convert. Transport faces the same test: EVs matter, but they're not the whole answer any more than heat pumps are on their own. A serious long-term energy strategy plans for diversity across the whole system – generation and storage, heating and transport together – not a single winning technology per vector, chosen sector by sector as each crisis hits.
