I’m excited to share that I recently completed a 4-week paid internship through Career Ready with the Infrastructure Industry Foundation. Over the four weeks, I had the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the infrastructure industry through a combination of workplace experience, learning sessions and site visits. One of the highlights was visiting different organisations and projects, including places like Enfinium, Gatwick Airport and Cubico. These visits gave me the chance to see how large-scale infrastructure projects operate in the real world and helped me understand the different careers and opportunities within the industry. I’m really grateful to Career Ready and the Infrastructure Industry Foundation for giving me this opportunity and to everyone who took the time to share their knowledge and experiences. Week 3 has probably been the busiest - and most insightful - week of my internship so far. From investment management and communications to site visits and renewable energy, this week really highlighted how many different disciplines come together to deliver infrastructure projects. We kicked off the week with sessions from PwC, gaining valuable insights into the world of professional services and the importance of collaboration in delivering large-scale projects. We also explored how investment managers, such as DWS Group, approach infrastructure investing and the factors they consider when evaluating long-term assets. One of the week's highlights was visiting Stagecoach London and enfinium. Seeing public transport operations and an energy-from-waste facility firsthand brought classroom discussions to life. It was fascinating to see how operational efficiency, sustainability, and safety all play a role in delivering critical infrastructure that millions of people rely on every day. A key standout moment, was spending the day with Cubico Sustainable Investments where we were introduced to renewable energy investing by Sean Fitzpatrick, Alexander Elliott, Bas Simpson before being challenged to develop an investment recommendation for a potential investment into a new wind farm, led by Matteo Strathmann. Working together as an investment team to assess the asset's opportunities and risks gave me a much better understanding of the decision-making process behind infrastructure investments. This week reinforced that successful infrastructure projects aren't just about engineering - they require strong financial analysis, clear communication, sustainability, and collaboration across a wide range of disciplines. WOW!! That is three weeks done with 1 more to go and still aint slowing down... This week has probably been my favourite so far, with every day giving me a new perspective on the infrastructure industry. We started the week with Lexington,led by Sophia Taylor where we learnt about the importance of public affairs in infrastructure and how stakeholder engagement and effective communication can influence policy and major projects. We also had the opportunity to spend time with PwC, gaining insight into the work they do across advisory, strategy and much more. Another highlight was visiting Stagecoach Group Limited which was honestly one of my favourite experiences of the internship. Seeing what goes on behind the scenes, from the colour-coded systems and operational planning to the transition towards electric vehicles and the long-term investments being made, was fascinating. It really opened my eyes to how much work goes into keeping London's transport network running. We also visited enfinium, where we learnt more about energy recovery through a presentation and Q&A with Luke Clothier. Afterwards, we suited up in full PPE and toured the site, seeing the operations up close. It was an experience I won't forget! To finish the week, we spent time with Cubico Sustainable Investments, learning more about sustainable energy before presenting our ideas on the best location for a wind farm. We then joined Evero to explore sustainable infrastructure projects and the future of energy. Every week of this internship broadens my knowledge and gives me an even greater appreciation to Career Ready and Infrastructure Industry Foundation for creating opportunities like this and to everyone who has taken the time to share their knowledge with us. Week 3 flew by, and for good reason. It was packed with new experiences that deepened my understanding of the infrastructure sector and the people driving it forward. The week began with an engaging session from Sophia Taylor at Lexington , who introduced us to the role of public affairs in infrastructure. Learning how stakeholder engagement and effective communication can influence policy and major projects gave me a deeper understanding of the sector. We also had the opportunity to spend time with PwC , where we explored how a Big Four firm supports infrastructure through advisory, strategy and financial expertise. On Wednesday, we visited enfinium , where we suited up in PPE before touring the facility with Thomas Varker. It was fascinating to see how waste is converted into energy. Who knew rubbish could be so powerful? After the tour, we attended a presentation and Q&A, followed by an insightful environmental talk from Luke Clothier. The visit highlighted how safety, sustainability and innovation all come together to drive the industry forward especially with climate change become a growing challenge in society which needs to be taken in account. On Tuesday, we started the day with DWS Group before taking part in a communications campaign workshop led by Raiesa Choudhury , where we presented our campaign proposals. In the afternoon, we visited Stagecoach London , one my highlights of the week Seeing how such a large transport operator manages its day-to-day operations reinforced the importance of planning, coordination and long-term investment in delivering reliable public transport. We concluded the week with sessions from Cubico Sustainable Investments and Evero , exploring renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure and future development projects. These discussions highlighted the growing importance of sustainability within infrastructure and the wide range of opportunities across the sector. Each week continues to strengthen my knowledge of the industry and develop my personal skills. I am incredibly grateful to Career Ready and the Infrastructure Industry Foundation, and every professional that has generously shared their, knowledge and experience throughout the programme. 𝗜𝗜𝗙 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟯 This week gave me an even greater understanding of the infrastructure sector, from public affairs and communications to transport operations, asset management and renewable energy. Monday began with an engaging session from Lexington by Sophia Taylor on public affairs. It was fascinating to learn how communication and stakeholder engagement influence policy and major infrastructure projects - I am definitely going to look into public affairs moving forward! It was a privilege to spend the day with employees from PwC, gaining an insight into how a Big Four (yes… another big 4) firm supports major infrastructure by exploring the role professional services firms play in supporting infrastructure investment through advisory, strategy and financial expertise. Tuesday began with a session with DWS Group before taking part in a communications campaign workshop with Raiesa, where we presented our pitches and campaigns. In the afternoon, we visited Stagecoach London, which was one of the highlights of my week. Seeing first-hand how such a large public transport operator manages its operations gave me a new appreciation for the planning, logistics and investment required to keep services running efficiently. It was great to connect what we’ve been learning in sessions to a real-life infrastructure business. Wednesday was spent with Global Infrastructure Partners (BlackRock), where we learnt more about infrastructure investing with Kyle Graham and Katie Wang before travelling to Gatwick Airport. Meeting John Higgins and Steve Wirths members of the management team and taking a landside tour, provided valuable insight into the scale and complexity of operating one of the UK’s busiest airports. It reinforced how investment is essential to maintaining and improving critical infrastructure. Lastly, Thursday introduced us to the growing role of renewable energy through sessions with Cubico Sustainable Investments and Evero. Learning about sustainable infrastructure, development projects and the future of energy highlighted just how diverse the infrastructure investment sector really is. Each week continues to broaden my understanding of the industry, and I’m incredibly grateful to Career Ready, the Infrastructure Industry Foundation, and all of the organisations that have taken the time to share their expertise and experiences.
