The first RTS demo on US soil happened this week in Dayton. We hosted the Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Panel (JDMTP) at our facility during last week's meetings in Dayton and showed the group live what Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) does: defect-free curved fiber composites at industrial scale. The technology that solved a 40-year manufacturing problem is now running in America. And we are open for business. If you build for US aerospace and defense, come see it for yourself 🚀 #ICOMAT #RTS #Defense #AdvancedManufacturing #EngineerWithoutLimits

That’s a wrap on Farnborough International Airshow 2026 for ICOMAT. It’s been a busy week, with some important milestones for the business and plenty of conversations about where aerospace and defence manufacturing is heading next. We started the week by announcing our latest work with the NCC – Innovating for Industry, successfully producing a five-metre aerospace wing skin using Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) directly onto representative production tooling. It’s an important step in showing how RTS can move beyond smaller demonstrators and into the scale and geometry of real aerospace structures. We also expanded our industrial partnership with TEKEVER to support the production and industrialisation of the AR5 in the UK, and signed an MoU with Morson Praxis to explore how our respective engineering and manufacturing capabilities can be brought together on future customer programmes. Alongside that, we shared progress from two Aerospace Technology Institute-supported programmes, ASPIRE and GENACOM, both tackling different parts of the same challenge: how we turn advanced composite technologies into manufacturing processes that are practical, repeatable and scalable. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to see us, and to all of the partners, customers and colleagues who made it such a productive week. Plenty to follow up on when we get back. #FIA2026 #FarnboroughAirshow #Aerospace #Defence #AdvancedManufacturing #Composites #RapidTowShearing #UKManufacturing

Great to see the ASPIRE programme featured by CompositesWorld, highlighting the technologies being developed to shape the next generation of composite wing manufacturing. Led by GKN Aerospace, ASPIRE brings together ICOMAT, the University of Bath, Carbon ThreeSixty Ltd, Lineat Composites and Pentaxia Limited, with support from the Aerospace Technology Institute, to develop and demonstrate new approaches to lighter, more sustainable and more scalable composite aircraft structures. We’re proud that ICOMAT’s Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) technology is contributing to both the wingtip and flap demonstrators, alongside complementary innovations in materials, manufacturing and structural design from across the consortium. Programmes like ASPIRE show what can be achieved when the UK aerospace supply chain works together to mature advanced technologies and move them closer to adoption on future aircraft platforms. #Aerospace #Composites #AdvancedManufacturing #Innovation #FibreSteering #RTS #FutureFlight

This week at Farnborough International Airshow, we’re showcasing the latest results from GENACOM, a collaborative programme between ICOMAT and the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), supported through the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) Programme. GENACOM has focused on turning the potential of Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) into an integrated route from digital design through to manufacture. The programme has brought together composite design and optimisation, forming simulation, RTS manufacturing software and robotic production, culminating in the manufacture of a 3-metre curved fuselage-frame-type demonstrator, representative of the scale and geometry of large aerospace structures. Behind the demonstrator is equally important progress in the digital toolchain. ICOMAT has developed dedicated design workflows and in-house RTS CAM capability that can take a composite design through manufacturing planning and into robot programmes for production. For us, that is what GENACOM is really about: moving fibre-steered composites beyond individual demonstrations and towards a repeatable, scalable manufacturing capability for future aerospace programmes. A huge thank you to our partners at AMRC, and to the ATI Programme, Innovate UK and the wider team who have supported the programme. At Farnborough this week? Come and meet the ICOMAT team to see the demonstrator and talk to us about where Rapid Tow Shearing could unlock new opportunities in next-generation aerospace structures. #ICOMAT #GENACOM #RapidTowShearing #AMRC #ATI #InnovateUK #FarnboroughAirshow #Aerospace #Composites #AdvancedManufacturing

A major step towards the industrialisation of Rapid Tow Shearing. ICOMAT and the NCC – Innovating for Industry have successfully produced our first 5-metre aerospace wing skin using Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS), deposited directly onto complex 3D tooling. This is the largest and most representative aerospace validation of RTS completed to date, taking the technology from flat-panel demonstrations onto representative aircraft geometry. Why does that matter? Future composite aerostructures need more than lightweight materials. They need manufacturing technologies that can deliver structural performance, production rate and scalability together. RTS decouples fibre steering from tape width, allowing wide material formats to follow complex load paths and 3D geometries while providing a route towards scalable composite production. Working with the NCC has allowed us to take another important step towards that goal, combining ICOMAT’s RTS deposition strategy, manufacturing methodology and robotic programming with the NCC’s aerospace manufacturing expertise, industry-standard tooling and validation capability. Swipe through to see what we achieved, why RTS is different and what this could mean for the next generation of civil, defence and space aerostructures.
