Work continues this weekend on the M42, as HS2 engineers press on with two major structures at the same time – the twin box near #Solihull and the #WaterOrton viaducts. This is the third of six planned weekend closures for these works. The M42 will be closed from 9pm Friday 14 August to 5am Monday 17 August J6 to J9 (northbound) and J9 to J6 (southbound). Our engineers have finished the structural work on three viaducts on the #WestMidlands section of HS2: Balsall Common, Marsh Farm and River Blythe. Together, they form the southern approach to Interchange station in #Solihull. The 495-metre River Blythe Viaduct crosses a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and we designed it with local communities to protect wildlife and minimise its visual and noise impact. Its neighbour, Balsall Common Viaduct, features a parapet design chosen by local residents, including a weave motif reflecting the area's textile heritage. This is a significant achievement for our engineering teams, with all three viaducts in the Solihull borough now structurally complete, following months of close work with local communities to get the design and landscaping right. We've unveiled a plaque 40 metres beneath Kensal Green Cemetery, marking the spot where our #Euston Tunnel passes directly beneath the graves of Sir Marc and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Two tunnel boring machines are currently driving the 4.5-mile Euston Tunnel between Old Oak Common and central #London, passing beneath the cemetery as part of the journey. Our CEO Mark Wild joined Katherine McAlpine, Director of the Brunel Museum, and engineers from Skanska Costain STRABAG to mark the moment and pay tribute to the Brunels, whose pioneering tunnelling methods still shape how we build safely underground today. The tunnel is due to be completed next year, with the boring machines finishing their journey just outside the new HS2 station at Euston. Our Chief Executive Mark Wild sets out where things stand with the railway and what's coming next.     With our revised cost and schedule now published, the programme has a clear, credible plan for delivery — underpinned by tighter controls, stronger accountability and better governance throughout.     Spring 2027 marks the completion of our project reset and the finalisation of a new baseline, giving us a detailed roadmap for the rest of the build, supported by four years of funding certainty from the Spending Review.     The next phase of work focuses on finishing major civil engineering between Old Oak Common and Curzon Street by 2030, ahead of rail systems installation, station fit-out and testing.     The government's recent HS2 Parliamentary Report sets out a window of 2036 to 2039 for when passengers could first use the line. Birmingham's new HS2 station is taking shape — we've lifted the first of more than 500 giant precast concrete beams into position at Curzon Street. These huge horizontal beams, up to 34 metres long and weighing as much as 58 tonnes, will support the station's seven platforms. Made up of 488 U-beams and 68 narrower L-beams, each one is lifted into place in a meticulously planned operation. Together, the beams will form part of an enormous 13,370 square metre deck — the size of two football pitches — connecting to viaducts arriving at the station from the east and ultimately supporting Curzon Street's seven high-speed platforms. We’ve signed new commercial contracts with EKFB and Align, the two civil engineering joint ventures building more than 100km of the new high-speed railway between London and the West Midlands. The new contracts are designed to make sure the railway gets built faster and more efficiently. They set clear deadlines for the work to be completed, improve how costs are managed, and make sure responsibility is shared fairly between HS2 Ltd and its contractors. Our Chief Executive, Mark Wild, said: "Today's announcement represents a significant step forward in our mission to regain control of HS2." Engineers have successfully completed the first phase of a dual construction programme to carry HS2 over the M42 in the West Midlands. Specialist teams worked day and night over the weekend to extend the two Water Orton viaducts over the northbound carriageway, while at the same time installing roof beams over the twin box structure near #Solihull. Our engineers have now passed the halfway mark for the twin box roof installation, with 94 of the 175 beams successfully installed. At the same time, a separate team extended the Water Orton viaducts over the M42, moving two giant 45-metre spans – each weighing 1,000 tonnes – into position using specialist transport equipment. Engineers have successfully completed the realignment of the A43 over a newly constructed bridge near #Brackley, Northamptonshire. Over two consecutive weekends, each carriageway was closed in turn and diverted across the new 66-metre bridge deck – while the other remained open – keeping disruption to a minimum. The bridge has been built using a top-down construction method – with the structure completed at ground level before excavation begins beneath it to create space for high speed trains to pass underneath. Work on that next phase can now begin. It's one of more than 500 bridging structures on the HS2 project, ranging from small footbridges to the record-breaking Colne Valley Viaduct. Following the successful installation of 50 roof beams on the twin box structure near Solihull in June, teams will return this weekend to install a further 44 beams over the northbound carriageway. At the same time, a separate team will begin extending the Water Orton viaducts over the M42, moving two giant 45-metre spans – each weighing 1,000 tonnes – into position using specialist transport equipment. The M42 will be closed from 9pm Friday 24 July to 5am Monday 27 July J6 to J9 (northbound) and J7a to J6 (southbound). The M6 Toll will also be subject to closures during part of this weekend.
