I just heard that Ronzoni is discontinuing pastina. Mac and cheese used to be my comfort food but since I have to watch my cholesterol, I rarely indulge. Pastina has become my new comfort food. The only good news is that it seems Barilla brand isn't discontinuing it, at least not yet.

Catching up

It has been over 5 months since I have posted in my LJ/DW. I seem to be drifting away and that makes me sad. I miss having a place to post the mundane day to day things of my life and I miss all the lovely people I have met through LJ/DW.

On to some catching up. My grandbabies aren't babies any longer this year they will be 7 and 6 they are still cute and are the loves of my life. In 2020 in the middle of the pandemic, my blood pressure went sky-high and I was put on 3 blood pressure meds. I told everyone, who would listen, that I was sure the reason it was so high was the pandemic and the upcoming election. Well now that things are a bit more under control, my blood pressure has dropped, AND it's not just the meds because meds don't take 3 years to work.

Now on to the political part of the program:

I rarely sit down and watch hours of television but I did watch some of HLM's "The West Wing" marathon. Since I am not a big TV watcher I was really caught up in the commercials. They kept running an ad for CNN's show about Rudy Giuliani "What Happened to America's Mayor?" As New Yorker, I can tell you... nothing happened he was always like this he just hid it better. Back in 1989 when David Dinkins was running against Giuliani, I wasn't sure who to vote for. A friend worked as a court officer in lower Manhattan and I asked his opinion. He told me he knew both of these men through his job. He told me Dinkins was sharp, articulate, smart, and a true gentleman. He also said Giuliani was a bumbling baffoon and a drunk. This was back in 1989, so nothing much has changed.

I'm sure most of you have heard of George Santos, the Republican who ran for congress and won. After he won it was discovered he lied about EVERYTHING. He lied about his education and his employment, plus he told some disgusting lies about having employees who died in the Pulse shooting and that his grandparents fled the Holocaust. All lies. What most of you don't know is that this idiot is my congressman-elect. *Fingers crossed* we can get rid of him before his 2 years are up.

Thank you all for the good wishes, I am feeling much better and today is my last day of isolation. Yay!!

I am very disheartened about the 2 latest SCOTUS rulings.

I have told this story many times over the years but I don't think I have ever told it here and it's an important story, especially in the wake of the overturn of Roe v Wade.

I grew up in the '60s and it was a different time (not always in a good way). My paternal grandmother had a next-door neighbor and it was widely known that she performed illegal abortions in her basement. This woman was what I would consider elderly. She had badly arthritic fingers and barely spoke English. The rumor going around was that she had several high-ranking officials and several cops "in her pocket". The other rumor was that at least 2 girls had died due to complications from the abortions. Because she had paid off officials (again it was the 60s) she was never charged or shut down.

This story is a reminder that overruling roe v wade won't stop abortions, just safe abortions.

So Friday the 10th I got my 2nd booster I figured it's summertime and I want to see friends and enjoy life again. I had lunch with 2 friends that I haven't seen since 2019.

On Friday (the 17th) I volunteered for kitchen help for a local festival that is being held for the first time since 2019. Friday night I went to the festival.

On Sunday I started to get a sore throat and a little cough. I did a rapid test on Sunday and again on Monday (both negative). But since I was volunteering for kitchen help again on Wednesday I also took a pcr test on Monday and got the results back this AM. Yup, I tested positive! I have a call into the MD because I want to know if he recommends any of the meds that you take in the first 5 days.

Has anyone on my flist had any experience with the Shionogi drug or with Paxlovid?

My symptom, so far are mild and cold-like. Fingers crossed they stay that way.

So, I was on call for Federal jury duty for the last 2 weeks. I had to start calling on Sunday the 23rd. I was called down on the 24th and since it was Federal, it was an hour and a half trip by public transportation to downtown Brooklyn. I was only called down one day because it was before the holiday weekend. Tuesday I didn't have to go in but I did Wednesday and it was seriously looking like I would have to come back on my birthday.

I don't know if you are aware but if you are of a certain age you can opt out of jury duty. I turned that age yesterday. So I used my old lady card to avoid going to Brooklyn on my birthday.

I had a lovely day with lots of phone calls messages and texts from my sibs, friends, and family. Hearing from my sibs is always one of the highlights of my birthday. (If I had jury duty I would have missed all my calls because Federal court confiscates your phone for the day.)

So becoming an old lady has its perks! Although I didn't love having to tell a room full of people how old I was.

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes.

Hello all, we came back from our trip late Sunday afternoon. We drove from NY to FL on Tuesday the 8th and arrived in FL on Thursday the 10th. We stayed a week at sister #3's house. It was a great trip and except for one cold day, the weather was beautiful and it was so nice to see my sister. We headed back home on Friday the 18th because we wanted to hit DC on Sunday because we were hoping the traffic won't be too heavy. Our plan worked until we hit NY. NYC weekend traffic plus a few accidents delayed us a good hour.

I am now officially out of vacation mode and back to the old grind. I am not at all happy about it.

I was barely online the whole time I was away. The few times I went online I saw all the panic about Russia turning off the internet. Since there wasn't much I could do, I tried my best to ignore the whole thing.

Even though I have been back home for 4 days I haven't posted because it took me a while to decide what to do about LJ. For right now I am going to continue posting on both LJ and DW but I am going to make DW my main journal with cross-posting on LJ (when I remember). Does anyone on my flist still post solely on LJ?

I have stopped my automatic payment on LJ but I am paid up until December. I have backed up my LJ artwork journal on DW [personal profile] teragramm_artwork and plan to buy a paid subscription on DW. Who knows what will happen with LJ but I want all my bases to be covered.

In other news, I have (at least for now) given up on the daily questions because I have fallen so far behind. Although I might take it up again at another time.

I hope all on my flist have been well.

Here in NY, Omicron seems to be winding its way down. I did order the free tests and a few more masks from a company I really like.

Because Omicron was running rampant I have been hibernating again and doing a lot of shopping online. It's Girl Scout cookie time and I order some boxes online. Plus as part of his Christmas present hubby will be getting a monthly box of nostalgic candy. When things calm down I will probably be a few pounds heavier.

I have read bits and pieces of Joss Whedon's "redemption" article. Someone should advise him to just shut up. Blaming others for your bad behavior is not the way to go.
I've said this before but it's worth repeating, I would love to see the people caught in a scandal to sincerely say "I was wrong, I let my ego rule my judgment, I was a major dick and I'm sorry. I'm working hard to be a better person. I hope one day I can be forgiven for my past actions." That would be refreshing.

Daily Question:

16. What's the most creative use of emojis you've ever seen?
I have no idea, I rarely notice or use emojis, outside of a thumbs up and double hearts.

17. Where do you get most of your news?
Usually online or TV news

18. In 40 years, what will people be nostalgic for?
I am nostalgic for a time when it was taboo to discuss religion and politics and I am sure some people will feel that way in 40 years. (Not that I will be around to see it.)

19. Do you like reality/competition TV shows? Why or why not? If so, which ones?
I do like some reality/competition shows mainly "Top Cheif" and "Project Runway" but as with most TV, I don't watch often.

Things in NY are really bad, they are saying one in four New Yorkers have COVID. The past week I have pretty much self quarantined since 3 people I had contact with tested positive or were exposed. It has been at least nine days since I was exposed and I have no symptoms. (I didn't want to go out and wait in a line to be tested and be at risk of exposing myself again.) When things settle down and supplies are more plentiful I am going to keep a few at-home tests in the house.

I hope the experts are right and omicron fades away quickly. Most vaccinated people I know have had mild cases.

My holidays were very nice, quiet but nice. We got to see the grandkids on Christmas Eve and a few days later we found out that youngest granddaughter was directly exposed on the 23rd so anyone who was at the house on the 24th was considered exposed too. Thank goodness we are all fine.

So this year I decided to try to do the daily questions. I'm not sure I will be able to keep up but I am going to try. I might do a few days at a time I haven't decided yet.

Daily question:
1. After roughly two years now of living with various changes and restrictions brought about by the Covid pandemic, which, if any, measures do you think you will continue to do all the time? I keep hand sanitizer and a small spray bottle of alcohol in my purse and in the car, I think I will continue to do that.

I can't believe that it has been 3 weeks since I have posted. I have plenty to say just haven't gotten around to posting. Things here in NYC have been a bit crazy with all the mandates. If Fire, Police, and Sanitation workers don't get their first covid vaccine by Monday, they are on unpaid leave. Between the mandates and people over 65 eligible for a booster, the places giving shots are jammed packed. I haven't gotten my booster yet but I probably will before the end of the year. Have any people on my flist who are eligible, gotten their booster? How did it go?

I know it's not Wednesday but I thought we could all use a chuckle, especially since tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of 9/11. I know that I will probably be spending a good part of my day crying.

Below is a Meme I found on FB, I thought some of the writers on my flist would get a kick out of this list. Under the cut are 2 Whatever Wednesday Comics

How to Be a Good Writer

1. Avoid Alliteration. Always.

2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

3. Avoid cliches like the plague. They are old hat.

4. Comparisons are as bad as cliches.

5. Be more or less specific.

6. Writers should never generalize.

Seven: Be consistent!

8. Don't be redundant; don't use more words than necessary; it is highly superfluous.

9. Who needs rhetorical questions?

10. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

Hello dear flist, we are back from our mini-vacay. The area we were staying in had a spike in COVID cases but most places are having an increase in cases. *sigh*

On Saturday we went to a friend's garage sale. She is moving to Florida and I wanted to stop by to wish her luck and say goodbye. As we arrive, she asked me to put on a mask. Her husband, daughter, and son-in-law were all vaccinated and all got COVID. She basically bought her house online, then went to Florida to see the house. While in Florida, they got COVID. I, personally, am back to wearing a mask in any enclosed space. So, dear flist, please be careful out there.

Our mini-vacay was lovely and it was so nice to see my SIL again. The vrbo house we stayed at was a cute little cottage with a lovely backyard and deck. There was a local beach not too far from the house and we went to visit on our first day. As we were exploring the beach, SIL and I decided to take a climb on the jetty. As I took my first step up, my knee gave out and I fell. As I fell I slammed my arm/shoulder into the rocks and skinned my knee. I have a whopper of a bruise and I am still slightly sore. Despite the fall, it was a fun four days and we are already planning our next trip for when things settle down again.

While in Connecticut I realized that the state has the bag rules as NY. (There are no plastic bags given in stores, you either bring your own or pay 5 or 10 cents for a paper bag. I was a bit surprised because I thought only NY and CA had that rule. So now I am curious des where you live have that rule? Is the fee 5 cents or 10 cents for the paper bag?

I hope all on my flist had a good weekend.
teragramm: (Default)
Last weekend was a family baby shower, it was great fun and wonderful to see everyone again. Today we will be leaving for a 3 night trip to Connecticut to see my SIL. I haven't seen her for over 2 years, she's in Massachusetts, and the 3 and a half-hour drive to my house is becoming too much for her. So, we are renting a Vrbo halfway between our two houses at the Connecticut shore. Unfortunately, the weather is supposed to be rainy for the whole time we are away. It doesn't really matter because SIL and I can have a good time no matter where we are or what the weather looks like.

It sure is nice to see friends and family again. I am going to enjoy this while it all lasts. I don't think we will have to go into quarantine again but I am sure we are going to have to be careful with our social interaction come this fall.

I haven't done a real post in a while and I hope to do one soon. In the meantime with Covid numbers going up all across the country, I thought we could all use a bit of a chuckle. Under the cut are a few "Whatever Wednesday" memes/comics.

First off, I want to thank everyone who sent birthday wishes yesterday, I truly appreciate all the good wishes.

To celebrate my birthday we went out to eat at a local Portuguese restaurant. It was our first time eating out in 16 months! We had a seafood paella that was so good. The only bad part of dinner was that we went early to avoid a crowd but we missed the window for the grandbabies to facetime. Instead, my son sent a vid of the girls wishing me a happy birthday. So all is good. (They are so freaking cute)

Over Memorial Day weekend both my sons, youngest son's GF, my DIL, and the grandbabies came over for a BBQ. Unfortunately, it was a miserable day but we still managed to grill. My youngest granddaughter hasn't been to the house for 2 years. She wasn't even two last time she came over, so she didn't even remember our house and had a ball exploring.

It was so nice to see my family all together and having all the adults vaccinated, so the visit was free of COVID worry.

Monday I had an MD appointment and after 8 months of worry and 3 blood pressure meds, my blood pressure is finally at an acceptable level.

I hope all on my flist had a nice weekend and are having a good week!
