You can use Ask Photos, an experimental feature powered by Gemini, to search your library, ask questions about your photos and albums, and make edits.
When you search with Ask Photos, it starts by showing a page of relevant results. For simple searches like “beach” or “dog,” these results are usually enough. But if you ask something complex like “Photos that’d make great phone backgrounds,” or “What did I eat on my trip to Barcelona?,” Gemini models continue to work in the background to narrow down and highlight the most relevant results.
You can switch between the classic search and Ask Photos results at any time.
You can also use Ask Photos to edit your pictures. Simply describe the changes you want, and Gemini models will understand and apply your edits in seconds. Learn more about how to edit with Ask Photos.
Tip: This feature is still experimental, so it may give unexpected or inaccurate results. When you leave feedback, you can help improve Ask Photos for everyone.
Before you start
Important: This feature isn't available in all regions at this time.
Currently, Ask Photos is rolling out to a select number of countries and regions, and is available in several languages. Functionality can vary by location.
To use Ask Photos, you must meet the Gemini features in Photos requirements.
Tip: If you don’t have access to Ask Photos, you can still use classic Search.

Start using Ask Photos
Important:
- When you opt in to Ask Photos, the Search tab is renamed to Ask.
- Ask Photos is a Google Photos feature available to users who opt in to Gemini features in Photos. Learn more at the Gemini features in Photos privacy hub.
Step 1: Opt in to Ask Photos
You can choose one of two ways to opt in to the Ask Photos feature.
Opt in to Ask Photos through Search- On your Android device, open the Google Photos app

- At the bottom, tap Search
.
- You may find a welcome screen or prompt that introduces Ask Photos.
- To opt in to Ask Photos, follow the on-screen instructions.
- Unless you opt in, the classic search experience will remain your default.
- Even while opted out, a toggle to opt in to Ask Photos may appear at the top of the "Search" tab.

Tip: If you are unable to opt in to Ask Photos through Search, you can opt in through Google Photos settings.
- On your Android device, open the Google Photos app
- At the top, tap your Profile picture or Initial.
- Tap Photos settings
Preferences
- Turn on Ask Photos.
Preferences Tip: If you can’t opt in to Ask Photos with any of the methods above, you may not yet be eligible. Learn more about Ask Photos eligibility.
Step 2: Confirm your face group & label others
Important: As part of the onboarding, you may be asked to provide information about people in your photos. When you provide the information, you’ll get more accurate and helpful responses from Ask Photos and also improve other features in Photos.
Confirm which face group is yoursTo use Ask Photos, you need to confirm your “me” face group. If you exit or skip the “Confirm which face group is yours,” Ask Photos considers onboarding incomplete.
- On the onboarding screen, tap a photo of you.
- If you want to change the name of your face group, tap the name.
- Enter a new name.
- Tap Continue.

Important: When you add a name to a face group or edit the name of a face group, the new names are saved to "People & pets in Collections.” Learn more about Face Groups.
- When prompted, you’ll see suggestions to label people in your photos.
- You can skip labeling names and relationships during onboarding.
- For each face, enter the person’s name and optionally select a relationship like Mom, Friend, Spouse, or Sibling.
- To add the word that describes your relationship with that person, tap More options.
- Review and confirm to save the labels.
Tips:
- You can always add names and relationships to faces from the chat. At the top right corner of an Ask Photos text response, tap the three-dot Menu
- After onboarding, you can add, edit, and remove names anytime in your "People & pets in Collections."

Use Ask Photos
Use Ask Photos to search your libraryImportant: When you search with your voice, Google Photos doesn’t store your voice recordings anywhere. Learn more about what data is stored when you use voice input for Ask Photos.
You can use Ask Photos to search your Google Photos library by simply describing what you want to find, such as a specific memory, a past trip, or details within a photo. Learn more on how to search your photos.
You can use Ask Photos to chat about a specific photo from your library, edit it just by asking, and search for similar photos.
Important: You can only use Ask Photos with images that are backed up. Learn how to back up a photo.
- On your Android device, open the Google Photos app
- Select a photo you want to chat about.
- Tap Ask

- Enter your prompt in the search box.
- To use voice input, tap Microphone
.
- To use voice input, tap Microphone
- Tap Send
.
- After you get your initial results, you can ask follow-up questions or get clarification.

.Tip: You can tap on the suggestion chips anytime.
When you tell Ask Photos information that it could use in the future, it may add this info to the Remember List. When this happens, you’ll find “Added to Remember List” in the chat. You can always access the Remember List through the app settings.
- On your Android device, open the Google Photos app
- At the top, tap your Account profile photo or Initial.
- Tap Photos settings
- Tap Remember List

- Next to the item you want to delete, tap Delete

This experimental feature from Google Labs won't always get it right, and may give inaccurate or inappropriate answers that don't represent Google's views.
- On your Android device, open Google Photos
- Tap Ask

- Ask a question.
- At the bottom of the response, tap Thumbs up

Stop using Ask Photos
Disable Ask PhotosYou can turn off “Search with Ask Photos” from settings:
- On your Android device, open the Google Photos app
- At the top, tap your Account profile photo or Initial.
- Tap Photos settings
- Turn off Search with Ask Photos.

- You can return to use Ask Photos at any time.
- You can turn off Ask Photos and other Gemini-powered features in Google Photos:
- Open the Google Photos app
- Tap Photos settings
- Turn off Use Gemini in Photos.
- Open the Google Photos app
Humans don’t review Ask Photos responses, unless you give feedback, or in rare cases to address abuse or harm. To help us improve Photos, Ask Photos queries may be reviewed by humans, but we first take steps to protect your privacy. You may turn off query review in settings:
- On your Android device, open the Google Photos app
- At the top, tap your Account profile photo or Initial.
- Tap Photos settings
- Turn off “Allow us to access your queries.”
