Brella, 30s, they/them. Lives by the ocean. Fiction MFA student, Clarion alum, video game dilettante, relationship contemplator, correspondence enthusiast, avid collector of concepts.

Performing CPR on this journal so that it's not just dead space for my annual Yuletide letters. I write about writing, daily life, fannish musings, and my cats.

my thread here

School starts up again this week... and then I have only one week left before my first semester is done... we got our Christmas tree yesterday, a sweet little Turkish pine.

Tidings of comfort and joy &c.!

I am all registered for my spring classes! I am taking Modern Criticism, Workshop in Poetry, and Practicum in Teaching. I am waitlisted for The Real Thing: Writing the Erotic, and would sell any of those other classes to Satan for one corn chip if it meant I got to take that one. The professor, Caro de Robertis, is a brilliant writer, thinker, and teacher, and I have been fortunate to take a Workshop in Translation with them this semester. I am finally sitting down with their latest novel, The Palace of Eros, and allowing it to fling my heart relentlessly against the cliffs and crags of big feelings. Their prose is divine.

Somehow I'm on Season 6 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. It is kind of like a telenovela for me, a white person. This season is maybe the first one where anything actually happens. Stabler's wife has left him and Fin has a son. Both of these revelations are given one line of dialogue (one scene, in Fin's case) and then never meaningfully addressed again. Alexandra Cabot came back for one episode! It was extremely funny to see her and Casey Novak in a scene together, where it became apparent that Casey Novak is dutifully echoing every note of Alexandra Cabot's voice and vibe. Casey Novak obliterated a murderer on the stand by making him explain what "LMAO" means.

I have been trying to find the time to write but lots of little things are arising. I've somehow discovered a love of doing dishes and making the kitchen look clean. Not sure how long this will last. But I have been putting on my "daylist" on Spotify and using the dish-washing time to discover new music, like "Beauty School" and "Bop Ba" and "Biblical Love" (welcome back Jade Ellsworth/Casey Blevins). It is our first proper rainy day of the season today and all I want to do is skip class and work and wash dishes. Sicko mode.

Well, actually, what I would really do with my time would be play Final Fantasy XVI

Dearest Yuletide writer or treater,

Sorry for saying that I would have this letter completed by 10/19 and then not doing that. It has been a whacky autumn for me! I am wrapping up my first semester of grad school, planning for my wedding in the spring, and recovering from a brutal cold in between. Thanks for being patient with me even though I'm every Yulegoat's worst nightmare probably. I never seem to get ahead of these things even though I tell myself I will next year, next year, next year for sure...

Treats are welcome, as always!!!
