I hate my computer. The last few weeks I've been having problems with it shutting down shortly after it starts up...no particular reason, it seems--tech guy said it sounds like a hardware problem. Usually it just does a scan disk but today one of the registry files was corrupted and because I don't actually have the winxp disk (just the OEM from Acer) I ended up having to use the recovery disk which wipes your entire HD. *sigh*

Thank god I bought that external HD a few months ago--I've been using it to save my fic to directly and to back up my My Docs folder when I thought of it, along with a few other things that I didn't really want to have to try and re-d/l--I've lost a few things but it's certainly not the disaster I had a year ago Nov. I think I'll start putting the games I d/l on the external HD as well. Just so I won't have to re-d/l them again.

So now it's just reinstalling all the software I had and d/l some of the programs (and god knows how many windows updates....). Luckily, I had the laptop home from work, so I'm not completely without a computer. I'm going to find a program that lets me image the HD as a back up, so that hopefully, I won't have to go through all of this crap the next time it happens.

What I really need is a new comp...but unfortunatley the finances do not allow that at this time, so I shall just have to limp along with what I have.

This is NOT how I planned to spend my Saturday afternoon.

Oh, and the outside handle on the driver's side van door broke yesterday morning, too. I can still open it from the inside and since the financial situation is Not Good, I shall be limping along with that as well. It's not THAT inconvenient to have to climb over the passenger seat to open the driver's side door. Really.

Is it too much to ask that things go along smoothly for more than 48-72 hours at a time? I mean, really? *sigh*

I picked up Brokeback Mountain on DVD today. I'm so happy, I love this movie so much. I went to a theatre in the city (a 2 hr drive one way) over xmas break to see it because I didn't want to wait til later in January for a theatre closer to me. If you haven't seen the movie there're spoilers in here

spoilers here )

Tech Guy was in today and trying to get the printer counter software to work and he still can't. He's gonna have to get K to come up and help him--K is good at network stuff like that. Of course, every time TG came in to check the printer and it didn't work, I laughed...Not really hard or anything but it was funny. Heh. (We've got a colour laser printer and before he sets it up for teachers to use, the PHP wants counter software to limit printing because of cost.) Had to laugh TG came in and told me I had $110 for printouts (each printout =$1) I was like "Hey, cool. I was only supposed to get 20 copies." He said he'd cover it by saying I was the one who had to keep testing the printer to see if it worked. I looked at him and laughed and said, "Like we have to tell the principal." She'd never ask.

Still have not succeeded in going a full day without interacting with her. I've come close a couple of times...but she'll speak to me in the hallway or come in and ask for something. *sigh* And really, I won't count it if she's not there.

The Resource Teacher brought the yearbook stuff down to me, so I'll be immersed in getting that set up on the computer. I've got the class pics done with the lists of who the kids are in each. I've got those out to the teachers asking them to double check that I go the right name with each kid and that spellings are right. Before I was involved, they'd have to list the kids. But I know the names of all of the kids. Now, some of the primaries, I don't know their last names... but I have class lists. I'm doing all the computer related work--graphics and typing; sounds like a lot but it's really only about 80 pages or so and not really difficult. And I enjoy doing it. I also look after the cash for yearbook sales--it's surprising how many teachers are afraid to handle money or be responsible for it! I worked in my parents corner store as a kid/teenager so it doesn't bother me.

Tomorrow is Friday, thank goodness. I think I'll try and get all the Yearbook stuff done that I have. Then it should only take a couple more afternoons or mornings to finish it up. Yay.

My step brother got my mum's old computer last fall. He had a modem put in (since my mum's new comp didn't come with a dial-up modem, she took it from her old one) shortly after he got, by the guy at the shop where mum bought it. Yesterday he finally gets his sister (my step sister) up to his place to show him how to use it. (My step brother is most likely high functioning autistic but never officially diagnosed and he would have it at a very low level--he lives on his own and such but has the social skills of a gnat. He could be boring you to tears and never know it. *sigh*) Anyhow, I stayed home, seeing as I don't get along really well with him and limited contact really is best.

Sis called me about an hour after she'd left--they were having problems with the machine. Now it's an old PII with (I think) 256MB RAM and a smallish HD. So it was taking forever to load and sis shuts it down while it's loading. *headdesk* Then it comes up in safe mode, so she shuts it down and restarts it. And it's taking forever to load again; I ask her if the little blue bar at the bottom of the screen is going back and forth; it is. So all I can tell her is that it's still loading and she has to remember it is even slower than OUR old comp, which was a PIII. Plus win98 is just slow. When she got home i asked if they got it working. No, they didn't, now it won't recognise the keyboard or the mouse. Of course, my brother is working this weekend, so I'll have to go up tonight and take a look at it or he'll torment us until we fix it for him.

Honest to god, I don't know what it is with him and technology. He wants the old comp but doesn't even try it for 4-6 months???? Yes, I imagine tonight will be fun. Wish I had some idea why it's not recognising the keyboard/mouse. *sigh* I need it to at least recognise one of them. ACK.

This is what happens when one is the family computer tech. *sigh*

Tonight I was having trouble loading gmail on my opera browser. It wouldn't load, wouldn't load, but it would load in IE. So, I googled the problem and one of the solutions was to clear the cache. So, I did and gmail worked again, and, lo and behold, my little mood icons on LJ are working again!! *head:desk*

I do love opera (the browser, not the music). I even use it at work. One day, Tech Guy was in the library and getting me to log in to the email admin (I have admin rights to the email and some admin rights on the server) which is web based. When I clicked on the link, it popped up the password box, which looks quite different in opera than IE. He was all like, "What's that?" I laughed and said Opera. He just shook his head. He knows I'm the techie sort. When I got my new comp last year, it had MSN messenger on it, which is only semi-allowed. Well, he had to take the comp back, and because I'd mentioned it, he took it off. But that was okay, cus while I couldn't get into the msn site (it's blocked board wide) I did find the page for our isps msn connected page. And I was able to d/l msnger from there. I don't use it during the work day, but if I'm staying through for an evening event, I'll use it after school hours. *shrug* I didn't tell Tech Guy I d/l it again, but he's worked on my comp since and hasn't said anything. *G*

I'm glad I know what to do now to fix the gmail and animated gifs problem.
