skybound2: (Avengers Cap in Smoke)
It's been a while since I posted, so I thought it was probably time. Life has been busy, as per usual. This weekend marks the last weekend that I will have to deal with Girl Scout cookie sales, which have been going on for the last 6 weeks. SO CLOSE to being done. Ugh. Every year I take this on, and every year by the end of it I feel like I'd rather lay down in front of a train then do it again, and yet, I do. Rinse, repeat. This year was just made more rough because now we have the nephew staying with us several nights a week, and so that is taking up a lot of time and energy that I just don't feel like spending trying to sell COOKIES of all things.

But it's just about over. Thank goodness!!

Moving on, the nephew has been with us for about 6 weeks so far. Not very long, really, but in some ways it has seemed a lot longer. We love having him, WHEN we have him. The biggest issue is the pull-back we are now getting from his mother, and subsequently from him, regarding staying with us. Read more... )

On a separate note, I can not express how glad I am that Friday is FINALLY here. I spent the last two weeks VERY busy at work, and also, sick. Quite sick. As in, I was down for the count the last two Saturdays in a row. The first Saturday that I was sick, I thought it was just a 24 hour thing, as by Sunday I was improved enough that I was okay to attend our annual "Trip to the Museum" planned with the two 7 yo nieces and the 3 yo nephew (it was his first trip) and we didn't want to cancel. But, that trip wore me down, and that Monday I was sick again. (Luckily, the office was closed that day.) By Tuesday afternoon, it just got worse. I was working from home by that point, as I had too munch to finish and couldn't call out completely. I muscled through the rest of the week, finally going back into the office for a full day on Friday. Which meant I pretty much didn't move from the couch Saturday, or most of Sunday. Then I DID call out from work on Monday. But this past Tuesday I was finally starting to feel human, only for poor Magus to finally get what I had. Which is apparently a 10-day virus. So, yeah, I am looking forward to NOT being sick this weekend. *fingers crossed*

In other, completely unrelated news, SIMON GAGNE IS BACK WHERE HE BELONGS WITH THE FLYERS!!! *SQUEES* That was just about the high-point of my week. And will probably remain so for a good long while.
skybound2: (blinking)
So this morning, there is day-old snow still frozen to the ground, the 'actual' air temperature is 12F (-11C), with a wind-chill 'feels like' temperature of 0-1F (-17C), and the nephew wanted to argue with me about wearing his coat, hat, and gloves because: 'I look stupid.' I argued that what would be stupid would be NOT wearing a coat, hat, and gloves in this weather. And also, that I didn't care whether or not he thought he looked stupid, he was wearing the suckers. Especially considering he will be walking home from school with his uncle today. I informed him that his ticket to being allowed to commence said walk home from the school would be actually HAVING all three of these items on his person when he exits the school, or his uncle will send him back in to get them.

Of course, this means that he promptly 'forgot' his hat in the car when he got out of it to dart into the school this morning. Joke's on him though, because now it is in his uncle's bag, and will be plopped unceremoniously on his head when he starts the walk home this afternoon.

I say again: Ahh, teenagers. That very particular set of years when looking 'cool' is more important than getting frostbite. (I say this as someone who had to stand outside for an hour last night waiting to pick up a refill on Girl Scout Cookies for my troop. I was wearing a sweater, a coat, a scarf, a hat, and TWO pairs of gloves, and I STILL couldn't feel my fingers enough by the time I was done to hold onto a pen long enough to sign the paperwork. That'll teach me to forget my hand warmers next time...)

skybound2: (sigh)
The bad news is that the head/throat cold thingie I've been battling is viral, and according to the doctor 'could linger for months.' *sigh* I took off from work yesterday to see the doctor (also, didn't want to go into the office if I was contagious), and came home with some steroids and a prescription strength cough suppressant. They seem to be helping (although my regularly scheduled 'I'm a girl' reminder isn't making things any easier on me), and I just want to go home eat my frozen raspberry and chocolate chunk Greek yogurt (soothes the throat AND the out-of-whack emotions - double win!) for the rest of the day.

Alas, I cannot.

Because I am not contagious, I will be attending the girl scout meeting scheduled for tonight (it will get done RIGHT before the start of playoffs, thankfully, so I will be home in time for that). This is a good thing, as this week's meeting is a makeup meeting for LAST week's meeting, which was canceled. (On account of my having been the only leader available, and you can't hold a meeting with just one leader.)

Also, progress has been made on the computer fixing front! Spoke with the tech guys who have my computer, and the part should be arriving tomorrow (possibly Friday, but I'm crossing my fingers for earlier). So there is a good chance I will have it back by Saturday. Which...won't make a lick of difference, because Saturday I am taking my niece to NYC to see Wicked as promised. (In typical 14-yo fashion, last week she called to see if there was any chance that we would be back in time for her to go to her friend's birthday party that night... Teenage priorities. Gotta love 'em ;-P)

Still, with any luck, I can have the computer back by Sunday, which (if I can pull myself away from ME3 MP for any length of time) might mean that I could get a decent amount of writing in! (I've been writing on my tablet, but it's just not as comfortable as writing on my laptop. Also, thanks to those sales that Amazon has had lately, I know have DA:O, DA2, ME1, and ME2 (given to me free by BioWare way back) for the PC. This means: MODDING AND FRAPS AWAY!

Again, if I can bother to put down ME3 MP long enough. Also, there is a hockey game on Sunday. And I REALLY do need to weed my garden. Oh, and having my laptop working again PROBABLY should mean that I should get on building that new website for my mother. *sigh* It's a little sad for me that I use to LOVE building websites, and now...not so much. But, she doesn't really have anyone else, and her website NEEDS an overhaul. So, I should get that done. *grumble grumble*

Just...maybe later...

Hey all. You know what today is? Today is the start of girl scout cookie season. Also known as: 'Sky's seven weeks of frustration.' I'm much more organized this year than I was last year at this point in time. I've got all of my girl's information logged into the online system. All of my spreadsheets are set and ready to go. I've learned from the free-for-all cookie pick up mistake of last year, and have set down very specific 'you may come and get cookies from me' boundaries with the parents. And I'm hopeful that things will go smoother this time as a result (and ultimately be less frustrating). Regardless, having to deal with mountains of cookies at my residence (well, in the office beneath my residence), and what is certain to be an insane number of text messages/emails/phone calls (I went over my allotted text message amount last year for the first time ever due to cookie season) is certain to wear thin in a couple of weeks.

Luckily, there is a bright, shining light at the end of the cookie tunnel this year. That being the release of ME3 promptly after I complete all of my required cookie duties. You better believe that I will be inaccessible by just about any and every means that week, aside from my Xbox console of course.

In the meantime, tonight I have tickets to the Flyers v. Islanders game! *bounces with glee* My mother got me tickets for some great seats as a present this year, so I'm super excited. Let's just hope that this game goes better than the last game that I went to (back in October) wherein St. Louis had their way with my boys. *grumbles* I actually don't know yet if Magus or my nephew is coming with me tonight. Nothing like finalizing plans at the last minute though, right?

In other news, my mother declared this past weekend that I had to read The Hunger Games series before the movie comes out, as she wants someone to talk to about it. (She then shoved the books into my arms and sent me on my way.) I honestly didn't have any interest in reading the books. But, my Mom requested that I do, and they are quick reads. I started them at the beginning of the week, and despite having several night time meetings/activities this week, I am already half-way through the second book. If I keep up at this rate, I'll have the third book done before Sunday. They aren't bad, but the writing style is very basic, and I kind of don't care about any of the characters. Probably because I've failed to connect with the main character, and since the story is told from her point of view it makes it hard for me to give a damn. Parts of the plot are interesting enough, and I find the world that Collins has developed intriguing, but it's just missing that special something I need to really hook me. Which is a pity.

It's funny that my problem with these books stems from too basic of a writing style, and just overall lack of character depth/development (a common problem with any fully first person story, IMO) whereas I still haven't finished the Song of Ice and Fire series yet because Martin's writing style is so freaking thick with details that I need scuba gear to get through it all. Perhaps after I finish the last Hunger Games book, I will venture back into the ASOIAF books. Hopefully the change up won't make my head explode.
skybound2: (X-Men Wolverine/Rogue Kiss)
Hey all!! How are all you folks out there in cyberland? Good, I hope.

As for me, last week I took two days off from work (Wed. and Thurs.) and had Friday off for the holiday (in addition to Sat. and Sun.). Then, yesterday we got hit with a mini-blizzard, which resulted in my planned annual trip to NYC being canceled (no sad face though, because I got to spend the whole snowy day holed up in my house with Magus, watching movies and playing video games), and my working from home today! (Though, admittedly, I ain't getting a whole lot done...) So much snow on the ground out there, and INSANE winds. *brrr*

Needless to say, this has been simply wonderful, and going back to the office tomorrow is gonna SUCK. Luckily, it is only for three days. I think I can deal with that. *whimpers*

The holidays went well for us. Made my cauliflower dish for the extended family, and it was well praised (yay!cauliflower), and got to catch up with everyone in a mostly not-too-rushed fashion. I missed out on a couple of Magus' family activities (which made me sad) on account of helping my Mom out, but I still got to see his family. Which is good.

The week leading up to the holiday was filled with lots of club activities. The JWC had the annual caroling that we do at the senior car facility across the street from me, but this time, we included the girls from the Daisy troop I co-lead in the mix. We had a packed house, with lots of homemade cookies, and a bunch of people attempting to sing carols when we only ever seem to know one or two verses per song. But still, fun! Also made crafts, including a cute little snowman ornamnet, with the girls at our last meeting. Which I got to hand deliver to each of them later on (more fun than I thought it would be doing that!); the girls are adorable, and I'm growing to really like this activity of mine!

Another JWC (sorta) activity was the collection of lots of gifts for charities. My brother's office (the one located below the apartment I live in) was turned into a donation collection center for them all. We were helping collect and organize new gifts for five wish tree charities via JWC, as well as gently used toys for a nearby homeless  through a separate organization. There were BAGS AND BAGS AND BAGS of things being dropped off every day. It was just amazing. The entire office was flooded with stuff, which was quite heartwarming to see. That sort of thing helps get you in the spirit of the season, I gotta say. And it was enough of a success that we are going to continue the collections down there every year. In fact, we got a buttload of stuff dropped off in the last two days before the holiday, and the office is FILLED again. The shelter is going to use for gifts throughout the year, on account of everything already being passed out for this year.

What was also good was that my BFF and her kids where in town from Germany for most of last week (excluding the holiday itself), and that just made this entire season all the more fantastic. Haven't seen them since my last trip over in July (not all that long ago I know, but kids grow quick, and I don't want them forgetting me anymore!!) Really, seeing them was the best present I could of got. Love them all to bits, and her kids got to spend Magus for the first time really (met him before, but never got to hang out), and her son just ADORES him, which makes me smile a whole lot.

As material presents go, in addition to lots of chocolate and a signed Flyers jersey (we shall not talk about the last game they played, or rather, the last game that the cardboard cutouts masquerading as my team played), I did end up with some unexpected new toys. Namely, there is a Kinect siting on top of my television now, and a new shiny Xbox sitting underneath of it :- D (The old one is being prepped for regifting to my Ma.) After determining that I am only mildly freaked out by having an internet connected camera mounted on my television and facing my couch at all times, I then proceeded to play HOURS of Fable III yesterday rather than a Kinect game HOURS. I'm liking it LOTS.

Maybe I'll give the Kinect game a go tonight. *ponders* This could seriously hinder my planned writing schedule for the next month...*doesn't really care*

*Unrelated icon is unrelated, but I am a little obsessed with Wolverine and Rogue and the X-Men in general at the moment and it is pretty and swoon-worthy and I don't need any other reason than that to use it do iI? DO I!?* *fangirls like whoa*
skybound2: (Illyria Broken God made by me)
Let's see. Monday, I took my Mom out to dinner on what would have been my parents anniversary. It would have been 41 years for them. Miss you, Pop.

The next night, I skipped the JWC meeting on account of a headache and needing to rest. I also did not open my computer or write that night at all. I did, however, watch obscene amounts of "Psyche" on Netflix. Just a fun show, with no feelings of commitment on my part. Which is always a good thing.

Wed. was our first Daisy meeting with the girls. It went fairly well. A little crazy at times, and one girl burst into tears and ran away from me and over to her Mom. (She was not pre-registered, so just showed up that night, so I did not have an activity book to give her to take home, and when I asked the girl next to her to please share, she freaked. She was better by the time the meeting closed.)

Then last night was the Flyers/Bolts game, wherein hockey was masquerading as pinball. Seriously, the number of goals last night was OBSCENE (8-7, Bolts won). Both of the starting goalies were pulled early on (Bolts pulled theirs during the first, and Bob got yanked before the second). I was nearly pulling my hair out during the third period, on account of the Flyers managing to not score a SINGLE GOAL that period, which, after the influx early on, was just kind of sad. And depressing. Depressingly sad.

And [livejournal.com profile] deathisyourart, I am resolutely not clicking on your post, because you said not to, BUT IT IS HARD!!!! *twitches*

I also watched more "Being Human": SO MUCH FUN. Hehe!

On a whole, I am doing okay NaNo-wise, though I am a little behind. But that's OKAY. Saturdays are my writing days, so I expect to get LOTS done tomorrow. Before I have to edit footage for CTV all afternoon Sunday, prior to the Leader meeting for the Daisy Troop.

Have I mentioned that I've been named cookie manager for our troop, and we need to sell around 1000 boxes of cookies? If anyone, and I mean ANYONE wants cookies, you just let me know. I'll post more about that in January when I have the cookies in hand, but I am willing to take online orders for the things. Cool?

So busy anymore man. Ugh.

Friday!

*does happy dance!* I've been waiting for this day. All. Week! And now it's here!!! *bounces*

Okay, yeah, got that out of my system.

Friday's are awesome for a couple of reasons:
  1. It's the end of the work week.
  2. It's the start of the weekend.
  3. SUPERNATURAL!
  4. Did I mention that it's the end of the work week and subsequently the start of the weekend?
So yeah. This is me. HAPPY.

This week I finally had the meeting with the current JWC treasurer to go over things in preparation for my taking over in January. And I've been declared the cookie manager for the Daisy Troop. This means that come January, I will be responsible for our troop seeling 84 cases of cookies. That's 1008 boxes, people! Which is...a crap-load of cookies. (27% of which are Thin Mints)

You better believe I am going to be hocking these to EVERYONE I SEE.

Last night I was also interviewed by my 12-yo nephew for his science class project. I felt all kinds of important and useful :-)

Also in news last night: THE FLYERS KICKED BUTT! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Bob keeps playing that well, because we REALLY need a goalie that has is dependable, ya know? During the game, Magus and my nephew argued over who would get to go to the next hockey game I manage to snag tickets for with me. They are adorable, and I am awesome for converting them.

And also, my brother and my SIL went and saw Roger Wates perform the Wall and I didn't break into tears and sob at the injustice of it all. Scout's honor! (Hah! I can say that now!) I may have felt a small minuscule pang of envy, but I just beat it into submission with my David Gilmour fan-helmet, and it was all good.

Lastly, it has been determined that this year for our day after that holiday in December trip to NYC (aka, what I call out 'Boxing Day trip') we are not seeing a Broadway musical, but instead we are going to see the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular (or something).

I'm just stoked because we didn't think we were even going to GO this year, and that thought made me a sad panda. And sad panda's are depressing. See? )
So, yay! No sad animal analogies for me!

I'm still plugging away at my NaNo novel. As of this very minute I am only TWO days behind in my word count! Believe it or not, this is a victory. *waves victory flag that looks suspiciously like a flag of surrender* And of course, because the NaNo novel is giving me grief, things like today's writer's block question, are giving me IDEAS. For serious. I want to write a short story based on the scenario presented in that question. I might not have a choice in the matter in fact. My muse is a cruel and capricious little brat. *eyes muse with annoyance*

Lastly, Magus and I watched the first disk of "Being Human" last night, and... I LOVE IT. Really and truly. I  like it enough that it deserves a decent review on my part, but I have an hour left at work, so now I need to go get some work-things done. *pouts* Maybe next time!
skybound2: (DA M!Hawke Glowy Eyes)
  • Last weekend I spent in Luray, VA with a whole bunch of folks from the DC area that I haven't seen since before the summer started (one of which was turning 30, and was the reason for the whole get together in the first place :-D). There were S'mores, and a Hot Tub, and Rock Band, and Taboo, and cake at midnight, and a whole lot of limes, and I got to sleep in a bunk bed, and it was awesome. The drive there and back reminded me just how MUCH I like to drive, and makes me want to go on another long road trip sometime soon. No time for that sort of thing, sadly, but it would be nice to do.

  • The Flyers lost last night. Boo. Boucher was not on his game, and I'm thinking that maybe they should give Bob a try in goal again. It was also really, kind of awful to see Gagne on the ice in Philly, and have him wearing a WHITE Jersey. Dude does NOT belong in Florida. *will forever be bitter*

  • I will not get to watch SPN live this week (again) on account of my attempting to be social and meeting up with a girlfriend I haven't seen in a few months. Yay! for socialization, boo! for missing the show. I'm sure I'll catch it this weekend, whenever I have time...

  • My droid broke. The screen stoppend working, and it isn't receiving calls. I feel like I've lost a hand. I keep twitching to pick it up and check my email, but it isn't there, so I can't. The new phone is coming today, and while I am happy that it is arriving so quickly (it just broke yesterday), I'm thinking a detox may be order, as that kind of twitchy feeling is too disconcerting for my tastes.

  • Tomorrow is the Fall Fest run by JWC, so I will be there for four hours. Later, I will get together with a bunch of OTHER girls that I haven't seen in months. It's like Fall shows up, and I put on my socialization hat. Hmm.

  • I've been obsessively listening to the following artists: Florence & the Machine, Metric, Mumford & Sons, Civil Twilight, and Arcade Fire. To an unhealthy degree. They've been feeding my muse. Well, my original fic muse at least. Which is good, as NaNo is coming up. My fanfic muse is on vacation in Tahiti right now, and isn't accepting calls. You should all listen to them as well.

  • Progress is happening with the Daisy troop. SIL and I met to come up with tentative lesson plans for the year, and I went to the GSA service unit meeting this week, which was very informative. We had hoped to have our first meeting next week, but that likely wont happen, as there was a problem with getting word out to the school. Maybe by the beginning of November though. *fingers crossed*

  • Also, yay!Friday!
